“American Hustle” Lives Up to the Hype

Opinion

Movies that are highly praised by the critics can sometimes leave audiences wondering what all of the fuss was about, which makes predicting what films are worth watching a lot like rolling dice. The new film American Hustle has been highly rated across the board, and at this point is nominated for 7 Golden Globes, but the question I had when I went to watch the movie was if this movie with an all-star cast was really worth all of the excitement. Burgundy’s Laughs are Lackluster in “Anchorman 2”

Opinion

Sequels to great movies are often hard to gauge; sometimes, they are just as good or even better, like in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, but other times they are unbearable to watch, as in the 1988 atrocity called Caddyshack II. With that in mind, I was a bit skeptical with director Adam McKay’s new film Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which gives viewers another chance to see Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and the Channel 4 Action News team once again. “What’s the Deal?” Another Steroid Scandal Leaves Fans with ‘Roid Rage

Opinion

Here we are, the first of August, and the baseball season is full swing. With the top teams battling for a shot at the playoffs and each game being crucial to the end of the year, the focus for most fans is not the battle on the diamond, but rather the battle behind closed doors between Major League Baseball and the players that were involved with Biogenesis clinic in Florida.

“What’s the Deal?” Braves Are the Best of the Worst in the NL Least

Opinion

The Atlanta Braves are playing less-than-stellar baseball coming out of the All-Star Break, as the team has managed a measly 3-4 record following a pair of series against the Chicago White Sox and the New York Mets, two teams that are not exactly lighting up the base paths so far this season. “What’s the Deal?” with Jordan Hill: Sleeping Through History

Opinion

Let’s go back two weeks to Tuesday, June 18th: it’s Game 6 of the NBA Finals, and it looks like the San Antonio Spurs are closing in on yet another championship. Now I’m all about watching championship games and seeing the victors crowned, but about halfway through the fourth quarter I’ve made a decision to call it a night: after all, the Heat have gotten on a significant run to take the lead, which makes a Game 7 look like a definite. “The Hangover Part III” Has Its Moments

Opinion

“The Hangover Part III” begins with a look into the life of Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis), whose thoughtless antics and all-around stupidity has continued to hurt his entire family, including his father (Jeffery Tambor), who has a heart attack and dies following an argument with Alan over an accident that decapitated a pet giraffe and caused a huge pileup on the highway. Braves Send Prado Packing to Unite Upton Brothers

Opinion

The Atlanta Braves pulled off a blockbuster trade on Thursday, as the team completed a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks that brought outfielder Justin Upton and third baseman Chris Johnson to Atlanta and sent utility man Martin Prado, pitchers Randall Delgado and Zeke Spruill, shortstop Nick Ahmed and first baseman Brandon Drury.

The deal sets the Braves up with arguably the best outfield in the majors, as the team will have Justin Upton, his brother B.J., and Jason Heyward all in the same outfield, putting together a trio that last year combined for 72 homeruns with 227 RBIs and a batting average of .265.

NFL Rookie of the Year: Two is Company, Three’s a Mess

Opinion

The NFL Wild Card weekend is nearly upon us, and what a weekend it promises to be. Headlines are numerous going into the first week of the playoffs for the 2012 season, but one of the most notable stories is the fact that three teams that will be in action are led by rookie signal-callers.

As you can imagine the three quarterbacks in question—Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson—have had outstanding seasons which have been the driving forces in their team’s success and playoff berths.

My Ultimate Sports Bucket List

Opinion

Everyone knows what a bucket list is: that certain list of things that you would love to accomplish sometime in your life, whether it is very realistic (like having a first kiss) or darn near impossible (for some, having a first kiss). The possibility of the matter in fact doesn’t matter; it just needs to be something that would be very special to you. With that in mind, I submit my list of sports-related accomplishments I would like to have in my life. (more…)

By waiting an extra 24 hours for this week’s Two Minute Drill, we were able to witness and discuss one of the NBA’s greatest players going down with a debilitating injury plus all seven rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft. Let the Picks Begin: 2012 NFL Draft Preview

Featured Stories

The NFL Draft is now a little under twelve hours from starting, giving head coaches and general managers across the league a small margin of time to decide on which particular players they want to bring into their organization. While drafts, especially first rounds, over the years have been remembered for the big surprises and zany trades, it appears that the 2012 draft has the potential to top those that had preceded it, as the only sure bets that can be made are that Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck will be drafted by the Indianapolis Colts and that Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III will be heading to the nation’s capital to play for the Washington Redskins. Let’s key in on what we should expect from tonight’s draft: (more…)

The Summation of Summitt: A Legend in Her Time

Featured Stories

As the final buzzer sounded, the sports town known as Rocky Top undoubtedly fell completely silent as the Tennessee Lady Vols fell to Brittany Griner and the Baylor Lady Bears by the final score of 77 to 58. It wasn’t the fact that this was the first senior class in Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt’s thirty-seven year tenure that failed to reach a Final Four in their time at Knoxville—a remarkable feat that will never be duplicated at any level of college basketball—that left the Tennessee faithful speechless, nor was it about Summitt’s past; it was the uncertainty that clouds her future. As Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey and the Lady Bears celebrated and moved another step closer to a championship, a more somber, serious storyline presented itself on the opposing sideline: is this the last the basketball world will ever see of Pat Head Summitt?
