Fannin Fights but Falls to Pickens

The Fannin Lady Rebels and Rebels traveled to Jasper on Tuesday for a pair of games against Pickens and unfortunately were unable to get back to Blue Ridge with any victories, as the Lady Rebels fell 69-56 and the Rebels lost 57-34.
The first game of the evening featured the Lady Rebels and the Dragonettes in a matchup that featured two fast-paced teams. The opening quarter of play saw both teams go back and forth, and despite some heads-up defensive plays by Fannin, Pickens held a narrow 16-10 lead at the period’s end.

Fannin kept fighting in the second quarter, matching the Dragonettes’ scoring until several threes allowed Pickens to go into halftime with a 33-21 lead. The Lady Rebels answered with eighteen points in the third quarter, but unfortunately Pickens scored seventeen points of its own, leaving Fannin down 50-39 going into the final quarter of play.

The Lady Rebels continued to play efficiently and had the makings of a comeback to start the quarter, but foul trouble for Fannin gave Pickens just enough free throws to outlast them. The Lady Rebels would lose this game by the final score of 69-56.

Hope Cochran helped the Lady Rebels stay competitive in this contest, and when it was all said and done she had a team-high twelve points. Cochran also had six rebounds, one block, and one steal in the game.

Molly Chandler made a countless number of plays in this one, and when it was all said and done she had eleven points along with a team-high seven rebounds. Chandler also had one assist in the loss.

Kayla Chancey did her part for Fannin against the Nettes, finishing the game with ten points, one assist, and two steals.

With the girls’ game now complete, the Rebels took to the court to take on the Dragons in a game that had the makings of a classic. Fannin forced Pickens into some serious foul trouble early in the game, and that along with some good shots from the Rebels left the road squad down 14-9 after the first quarter.

The Rebels continued to make plays in the second quarter thanks to both Austin Williams along with Kai Russell, whose three-pointer gave Fannin a 21-20 lead with 4:35 left in the first half. Despite great play to start the game, the last four minutes of the first half did not go the Rebels way, as Pickens scored twelve unanswered points to put the Rebels in a 32-21 deficit at the half.

Although the first half was impressive for the Rebels, the third quarter was a disappointment, as the Rebels were unable to keep up the pace and struggled offensively. With just one quarter of play remaining, Fannin trailed Pickens 48-25.

Needing a huge comeback to get the victory, the Rebels worked hard to cut into Pickens’ lead but were unable to do so, resulting in a tough 57-34 loss.
Austin Williams had a great game for Fannin, leading the Rebels in both scoring (twelve points) and rebounding (seven rebounds). Williams also had one assist in the loss.

Brandon Jordan scored his fair share of points in this game, finishing with six points. Jordan also had three rebounds and two steals.
