My Ultimate Sports Bucket List

Opinion

Everyone knows what a bucket list is: that certain list of things that you would love to accomplish sometime in your life, whether it is very realistic (like having a first kiss) or darn near impossible (for some, having a first kiss). The possibility of the matter in fact doesn’t matter; it just needs to be something that would be very special to you. With that in mind, I submit my list of sports-related accomplishments I would like to have in my life. Hit a Hole in One in Golf – Golf is a sport that I believe you have to be both blessed and determined to be skilled at, and it is needless to say that when it comes to a ball and a club I am neither one. The thrill of seeing your first shot land on the green and roll right into the hole is an unbelievable one to me, and although I would probably follow it up with several holes of over-par play, it is definitely something I want to experience at least once.

Attend the Falcons’ First Super Bowl Victory – The Atlanta Falcons haven’t exactly been what you would call “successful” in their time in the NFL (the team never posted back-to-back winning seasons until the Mike Smith era), which would make being in attendance on that glorious Super Bowl Sunday that much better. With so much of my culture centered around the game of football, I know that being on hand for a Falcons’ Super Bowl win would be a story that I would tell for decades to come.

Cut Down the Nets After a Championship – This one is probably the hardest to attain, because not only would it require working my way up to a head coaching position, but to also be very successful at it. While I may be able to attempt marking this off the list with a quick reaction time and a ladder at the NCAA tournament (watch yourself, Coach K), more than likely the only way this will happen is if a talented youth team comes calling.

Be at the Ballpark for a Perfect Game – Baseball is deemed too boring by many Americans, but I honestly believe that the feeling of a stadium when a pitcher hasn’t allowed anyone on base as the innings roll by has to be electric and as exciting an experience that the world of sports has to offer. With a giant crowd of people hanging on the edge of their seat as each pitch rockets to the catcher’s mitt, you can bet that attending a perfect game would mean saving the ticket stub and telling all your friends about what it was like live.

Stand Alongside the Fence at Churchill Downs for a Kentucky Derby – I for one am not a big horse racing fan, but to feel the thunder of the horses as they go gliding past you would definitely take your breath away. Animal rights’ activists may snicker all they want, but the thrill of seeing such a spectacle in person is one that should undoubtedly be treasured forever.

Go to Every Game of an Undefeated Season – Perfection is something that human beings have been chasing as long as we have existed, and in the world of sports perfection from high school on up into the professional leagues is something that is truly marveled and respected. I am sure that there is no greater feeling for a fan, whether you are following your hometown basketball team or your favorite professional football team, than to attend each game of your team’s season and see them come out on top when the final gun sounds. It is safe to assume that the price for this item on the list could range from quite affordable to “Honey, we need to take out a second mortgage”, but credit score aside I am positive that it would make for the memory of a lifetime.
