Rebels Unable to Catch Tigers

This past Saturday, the Adairsville Tigers traveled to take on the Fannin Rebels to play their last games of the tournament at the Mountaintop Holiday Classic. Both teams were coming from devastatingly close losses the day before with the Rebels losing to the Bobcats by four and Adairsville losing to Christian Heritage by one. Each team came ready to walk away with the third place trophy.
Starting off the game, Adairsville relied on outside shots while the Rebels relied on inside passes. This allowed Rebel post, Joel Kinser, to contribute four points for his team. Other posts for Fannin, Nathaniel Garrison and Ryan Beavers, also added onto the score down low. Garrsion scored three points while Beavers put two more on the board for the Rebels. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 12-11 with Adairsville in the lead.
With the second quarter starting, Adairsville found a new way to do most of their damage. The Tigers started to see opportunities for wide open layups and took them. Rebel, Chandler Kendall, led Fannin in scoring with eight points. Another Rebel, Payton Holt, was right behind Kendall with seven points. The Adairsville Tigers wrapped up the second quarter with a five point lead over the Rebels with a score of 29-24.
With the Tigers high pressure defense it made it hard for the Rebels to get to the basket, but not impossible. Rebel, Joe Satchell, scored five points for Fannin with his determination to score. Cohutta Hyde added two points on the board for the Rebels with his endless hustle. As soon as Jack Gobble saw the slightest slack in the Tiger’s defense, he made an outside shot, contributing two more points for the Rebels. The Tigers extended their lead over the Rebels at the end of the third quarter with the score at 41-33.
As soon as the fourth quarter began, the Rebels score strayed farther and farther from the Tigers. This is when Gabe Buchanan and Jalen Ingram came off the bench to play. The underclassmen each scored two points for the Rebels by putting their all into the game. The Fannin Rebels were unable to catch up the the Adairsville Tigers who ran away with a 56-37 win, putting them in third place of the tournament
After the game, the awards for All Tournament Players were handed out. The Fannin Rebels selected for this were Ryan Beavers, Payton Holt, and Chandler Kendall.
When asking Rebel head coach Scott Eggleston his thoughts on his teams overall performance, he stated, “Offensively, we got better. We have struggled all year scoring. During this tournament we have shot three’s better, we’ve shot at a higher field goal percentage, everyone is feeling more confident about shooting the ball, and we’ve played overall good defense.”
Coach Eggleston then shared players whose performances really stuck out to him with the FYN sports team. “Joe satchell started to shoot the ball well and got after it on defense. Chandler Kendall and Payton Holt came out of their slumps and started to shoot the ball well. Ryan Beavers played excellent. He really hit the boards well and scored a lot of points for us. Those four had a really good weekend. Joel Kinser is back from his concussion and he played well on the block and so did Nathaniel Garrison. We had some players with not as much experience come off the bench and play well. The main guys we have been relying on have really improved from before Christmas and we are excited for the next half of the year.”
Fannin’s loss to Adairsville puts their overall record at 3-12 while the Tigers stand at 6-7. Catch the Rebels next game on January 5 at 8:30 as they take on GAC at home!
Warriors defeat Rebels, 42-23

It was a fast-paced, but slow-scoring game early when the Fannin County Rebels varsity boys took the court at White County High School. Fannin (1-8, 0-4) came into the game ready to lay it all on the line, chasing their second win of the season. The Warriors (7-3, 1-0) were coming off a devastating one-point loss to rival Dawson County (55-54), ready to tip the scales of the win-loss column back in their favor.
A couple of baskets by Ryan Beavers (Fannin #35) and a free throw made by Nathaniel Garrison (Fannin #3) would be all the points the Rebels could put on the board in the first quarter, while White County’s Austin Rowland (#15) managed two baskets for four points; followed by a 2-pt shot by Austin Harris (#5), a 2-pt score by Jimmy King (#12), and 1-of-4 free throws made by Cooper Turner (#23).
After one quarter of action, White County led Fannin County 9-5.
The war of attrition continued into the second quarter, as Fannin was only able to score six points via Beavers (4-pts) and Joe Satchell (#5) who was held to only two points in the first half. White County scored another nine points, extending their lead (18-11), with Rowland continuing to make his presence felt on the court. He scored two baskets and went 2-for-2 on free throw attempts in the second quarter, giving him 10 points of total offense in the half. He’d finish the night with 20 points altogether, the leading overall scorer on the night.
In the third, the Warriors came alive offensively. Rowland and Harris came alive with a couple of 3-pointers, and the team spread the ball around with four different players putting the rock through the hoop on their way to a 15-6 run, keeping the Rebels restricted to another tough quarter offensively.
The lead would prove too much for Fannin to overcome in the fourth, as White County won by a final score of 42-23, improving to 8-3 overall.
The Rebels scoring was led by Beavers with seven points, followed by Satchell with five, Chase Culpepper with three, Cohutta Hyde with two. Nathaniel Garrison and Payton Holt each scored a free throw in the contest.
White County now looks to enjoy some time off for the holidays before facing Adairsville, Ga on Dec 28th in the Blue Ridge Holiday Tournament. Fannin County continues their pursuit of victory this Friday when they travel to Hayesville, NC.

The Lady Bobcats Nip the Lady Colts

The Lady Bobcats traveled to Fannin County High School this past Thursday where they were matched up to take on the Lady Colts for day one of the Mountaintop Holiday Classic. The Colts were striving to continue their winning streak of two games prior to the matchup at Fannin County while the Bobcats were determined to knock them off their high horse and redeem themselves from a seven point loss to Union just a few nights before.
The Lady Colts did not waste any time. The first chance they got on defense, they went into a full court press. Despite the Lady Colts high pressure defense, the Lady Bobcats broke the press with no trouble. Gilmer had amazing looks up the court and found many opportunities for wide open shots. Bobcat, Emma Callihan, broke through the full court press and led her team in scoring by putting twenty-three points on the board. Lady Colt, Lily Snyder, led Coahulla Creek in scoring with twenty points overall. Number ten for the Bobcats, Marylee Callihan, was right behind her teammate in scoring with nineteen points thanks to her ankle-breaking moves under the basket. The Lady Bobcats had a three point lead over the Lady Colts at the end of the first quarter with a score of 16-13.
With the Lady Colts behind, they decided to try what was working for the Lady Bobcats. Coahulla Creek started looking up the court for open passes where they added onto their score. Bobcat, Faith Ralston, starting driving the lane and contributed two points for Gilmer. The Bobcats defense came alive towards the end of the quarter which resulted in Mallory Kiser getting steals and putting seventeen points on the board. Lady Colt, Mallory Poe, makes a three point buzzer beater shot at the end of the second quarter. Poe’s shot made the score 35-29 with Gilmer still in the lead.
Since the Lady Bobcats tried to keep their lead just as hard as the Lady Colts tried to take it away from them, both teams started fouling. Bobcat, MichaMichaela Staley, drew fouls and made one of her shots which contributed one point for Gilmer. Another Lady Bobcat, Hope Colweu, contributed two points for her team from foul shots due to her grit down low. As the third quarter came to an end, the Lady Bobcats kept their lead over the Lady Colts with a score of 54-42.
As the fourth quarter began, the Lady Colts found what was missing in their defense. Coahulla Creek’s intensity came alive by making steals left and right. With the Colts making adjustments, the Bobcats had to do the same if they wanted to keep their lead. Gilmer started to have good looks and passes on the inside where they extended their lead. The ball would be on the Lady Colts side of the court one second, then on the Lady Bobcats the other. Despite the Colts burst of energy at the end, they could not gallop to victory. The Gilmer Lady Bobcats won the game with a score of 77-67 over the Coahulla Creek Lady Colts.
The Lady Bobcats win puts their overall record at 7-5 with the Lady Colts standing at 5-6. Catch the Gilmer Lady Bobcats next region game on January 5 at 7:00 as they travel to take on Northwest Whitfield!
Mountaintop Tourney: Bobcats Claw the Colts

This past Thursday at the Mountaintop Holiday Classic, the Gilmer Bobcats took on the Coahulla Creek Colts at Fannin County High School. Both teams were battling to redeem themselves from their lost games prior to the matchup at Fannin County. The Colts did not come to “horse around”, they put their all into the game and the Bobcats did the same.
During the first quarter of the game, Gilmer relied heavily on inside passes for shots under the basket which was how they scored the majority of their points. This allowed Bobcat, Kell Weaver, to be the main man inside throughout the game and lead Gilmer in scoring with twenty-five points. The Colts did most of their scoring from the outside thanks to their point guard, Maddox Adams. Adams led his team in scoring with twenty-eight points overall. Although the teams had different methods of scoring, it didn’t mean that one was better than the other. As the buzzer sounds for the first quarter to end, the Gilmer Bobcats and Coahulla Creek Colts were tied with a score of 14-14.
Both teams were fighting for the lead as soon as the second quarter began. The Bobcats gained more confidence in their shooting and started making outside shots. Bobcat, Tyler Sims, contributed twenty points for Gilmer with his outside shots. Another Bobcat, David Smith, followed the trend by scoring a three point shot for his team. Bobcat number two, Carter Hice, started driving the lane and put eight more points on the board. Gilmer took the lead over the Colts after the second quarter with a score of 30-24.
With the Colts making fakes left and right, Gilmer also found an opportunity for more points. The Bobcats had the determination to look up the court and see the open lane as a perfect chance for layups. Bobcat, Coady Cobb, had the speed to make the layups and contribute six points for Gilmer. Another Bobcat, Austin Daman, contributed four more points to put on the board for his team. Gilmer doubled their lead over the Colts at the end of the third quarter with a score of 46-34.
Although the Colts lead strayed farther from the Bobcats, they were not giving up. Both teams started getting after it on defense and drawing fouls. Towards the end of the game, Gilmer started driving the defense inside, leaving teammates on the outside open where they would score more points. The Colts proved to have outstanding determination and hustle by going after loose balls and getting steals on defense. However, it was not enough for them to trot away with a win. Being the last game of the night, the Gilmer Bobcats closed out the first day of the tournament with a 66-54 win over the Coahulla Creek Colts.
The Bobcats win puts their overall record at 4-8 while the Colts stand at 3-7. Catch the Gilmer Bobcats next region game on January 5 at 8:30 as they travel to take on Northwest Whitfield!

Three Fannin Wrestlers headed to state tournament

Since taking the reigns of the wrestling program at Fannin County High School, head coach David Henson has been working to create a winning culture. Each year he begins the season with a team meeting, where he discusses team and individual goals and expectations. While he expects his athletes to have fun, he also pushes them to toe-the-line, hoping to see them standing on the podium at the end of the season.
This year, three of Fannin’s varsity boys have fought their way to the big finale – the GHSA Traditional State Championships. The tournament will be held in Macon later this week.
To get to the state event, wrestlers first had to place within the top four of their class at Area competition. In doing so, they then qualified to compete at the Sectional tournament this past weekend at Greater Atlanta Christian School. The Area 6-AAA meet was held last weekend (Jan 17) at Morgan County High School in Madison. 113 lbs sophomore Landon Galloway (2nd Place), 126 lbs freshman McCay Turner (4th Place) and heavyweight senior Bradley Flowers each qualified to advance to the Sectional meet. Flowers was the Area Champion, going undefeated in the event.
“It felt great to win,” Flowers told TeamFYNSports after winning the Area tournament. “Coach Henson and Coach Hutsell have been telling me to keep working hard in practice and this is something I’ve trained hard for.”
At the Sectional meet, the top eight finishers qualify to advance to the state tournament in Macon. Flowers finished 3rd, Turner finished 4th and Galloway once again came away with a 2nd place finish to advance all three teammates to state.
At the state tournament, Flowers (31-6) will face Dalton senior Walter Richards (54-5) in his first match to kick off the bracket. Turner (41-10) will face senior Blake Rice (3-0 in the 126-lb class) of Hall County; and Galloway (30-7) will lock horns with Calhoun freshman Blake Bailey (27-10). Weigh-ins are at 10am on Thursday morning and TeamFYNSports will be on location, posting updates on twitter and facebook throughout the tournament.
Shirah tops All-American Team honors

Will Shirah was named 1 of just 12 pitchers nationally to the 1st team of the 2017 Perfect Game Tourney All American team. In 2017 PG elite travel baseball tournaments, Shirah played for the East Cobb Colt .45’s all summer and for the Upstate Mavericks in the fall.
TeamFYNSports had a chance to catch up with Shirah’s father following the announcement.
“It is a big deal since two of these guys on the first team are projected to go in the first 15 picks in the 1st round of the June 2018 MLB draft,” Cliff Shirah shared, “Will’s numbers compared favorably to both of them facing similar teams.”
He pitched a total of 41.2 innings and gave up only 11 hits and 3 runs for a 0.50 ERA and struck out 68 batters along the way. He had a 0.936 WHIP (walks plus hit per inning pitched) and averaged 11.55 K’s (strikeouts) per 7 innings pitched.
Shirah is a LHP and OF who played his freshman, sophomore, and junior high school baseball for Fannin County High School.
Shirah graduated early this December and signed to play for Coach Danny Hall at Georgia Tech this spring foregoing his senior year of high school baseball.

2017 Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament Begins Saturday

Fannin County High School is all set to host the 2017 Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament this Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. This year there are only four teams participating in the tournament, with Gilmer, Pickens and Hiwassee Dam all set to enter the gym for round-robin play. The tournament schedule is listed below:
Sat: 3 p.m. Girls: Gilmer vs. Pickens (boys play at 4:30 p.m.)
6 p.m. Girls: Fannin vs. Hiwassee Dam (boys play at 7:30 p.m.)
Mon: 3 p.m. Girls: Pickens vs. Hiwassee Dam (boys play at 4:30 p.m.)
6 p.m. Girls: Fannin vs Gilmer (boys play at 7:30 p.m.)
Tues: 3 p.m. Girls: Gilmer vs. Hiwassee Dam (boys play at 4:30 p.m.)
6 p.m. Girls: Fannin vs. Pickens (boys play at 7:30 p.m.)

Lady Rebels travel to North Hall despite snow days, fall 27-53

The Fannin County Lady Rebels (4-3, 0-2) varsity has put up some great numbers this season, but Mother Nature and the North Hall Lady Trojans had other plans Tuesday night in Gainesville, Ga. Despite school being closed due to dangerous road conditions, the teams decided to load up and give it their best.
Suzianne Pass, head coach for the varsity girls, shared her frustration with TeamFYNSports after the loss.
“We did not play up to our potential,” Pass explained. “We struggled and did not play well. Missing days of school did not help anything at the game. Hopefully we will get back on track today and tomorrow and play better at Dawson.”
Pass was sure to share the good with the bad, however, and gave credit to her players who stepped up in the loss, as well as others who have been going above and beyond so far this year.
“Maleah Stepp hit 3 threes for us [at North Hall],” Pass told TeamFYNSports, “and Makenzie McClure played very well.”
The head coach went on to share some more positives that have come out of her team’s hard work this season.
“Over the last few games we have had different players step up and be big for us. Savada Collins, Maddie Johnson have played well in the guard position. Maddie is a true leader for our team and she gets better each day. Hope Franklin has been our go-to kid inside. She is a huge asset to our team. Bailey Whitener, Kyla Seabolt and Mackenzie Johnson have come off the bench and played well also. Morgan Patton and Morgan Holt will hopefully return by the end of December.”
Patton is out with ankle injury and Holt is still recovering from an ACL (knee) injury.
Last but surely not least, Pass shared that one of her players returned to the action and will certainly be one worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses. “We were lucky to have Reagan Henderson back for last night’s game,” Pass shared. “She came off the bench and played hard. She makes herself known when she is on the floor. We have missed her.”
Catch Henderson and company this Friday night when the Lady Rebels commute to Dawson County High School and look to put up their fifth winning performance of the season, their first in region play (AAA-7).
TeamFYNSports Sportswriter Player of the Week: Drake Green

Although Drake Green isn’t listed on the Fannin Rebels’ MaxPreps roster, this senior lineman is certainly one who isn’t overlooked on the field. Green has protected the pocket from the edge of the offensive line all season long, and on the defensive side of the ball his height has offered an advantage to disrupt opponents’ passing attacks. Green played possibly his best game of the season Friday night when the Rebels hosted the East Hall Vikings and Fannin County High School. Congratulations to senior Drake Green, best wishes for the rest of your senior school year.
Rebels fall to Tigers 43-3

With a slight breeze on a relatively cool October Friday night, it finally felt like football season. The Fannin County Rebels ventured to Dawsonville with aspirations of upsetting the AAA Region 7 stat leaders, only to quickly find out what the hype surrounding Dawson County was very real.
The Fannin County High School Rebels recently garnered national attention for carrying a roster full of flags onto the field prior to kickoff, and once again, the team elected to carry Old Glory onto the field, a reminder to the crowd – and to the country – that these young men believe in honoring our nation and the historic tradition of American football.
The Tigers won the toss and elected to defer, giving the Rebels the opportunity to receive the ball first. After the kickoff, things started out pretty well for Fannin County. Senior quarterback Chandler Smith handed the ball to starting senior running back Cody Jacobs and he took the ball upfield for a first down. A quick snap and another run led to a six yard gain for the Rebels. Energy levels were high on the Fannin sidelines and you could almost see the hair standing up on the back of the offensive line’s necks as Smith took the next snap, stepped back, turned to his left, and threw the ball… directly into the jersey of a defensive back for Dawson County.

In Smith’s defense, the energy in the stadium was out of this world and his adrenaline had to have been turned up to 11; but nonetheless the Tigers seized the opportunity to turn the turnover into points and take an early seven-point lead over the Rebels. Eight minutes later, the Tigers held a 22-0 lead and the Rebels were reeling on their heels trying to stop the bleeding. Each time the Rebels got a drive rolling, something happened to stop them in their tracks: A pass on first down – intercepted. A solid run between the tackles – holding penalty. A qb sweep to the strong side – fumble (recovered by senior lineman Bradley Flowers). It felt like it was Friday the 13th – wait – it was.
The Rebels wouldn’t put points on the board until head coach Jim Pavao elected to take a shot at a 40-yard field goal. Senior kicker Alex White lined up and put the ball through the goal post with room to spare, but at this point the Tigers had put 36 on the board; another touchdown by the Tigers put the game out of reach, 43-3.
Dawson finished the game with 446 yards of total offense, 161 through the air and 285 on the ground. Fannin managed 227 yards of total offense, 105 passing and 122 rushing.
Fannin converted only 5-of-15 third downs, while Dawson converted only 7-of-12 in this game. The Rebels turned the ball over twice, both by way of interceptions, while the Tigers coughed the ball up on a fumble for their only turnover of the night.
Fannin County (2-5, 0-3) hosts Lumpkin County(0-7, 0-3) this week for homecoming, both teams fighting for their first win in region play.

This week’s #TeamFYNSports sportswriter player of the week was an obvious choice: senior Bradley Flowers. Flowers has been the heart of the offensive line all season. In fact, he’s played so well that the Fannin coaching staff recently decided to start using the 260-lb juggernaut on the defensive side of the football in short-yardage goal line situations. Flowers’ most memorable moment offensively Friday night at Dawson County was his offensive fumble recovery that prevented a turnover on the second drive for the Rebels. Later in the game he made a huge hit on defense, preventing what was nearly a touchdown inside the 5-yard line. Catch Bradley Flowers and the rest of the big linemen back in action this week as Fannin hosts Lumpkin County for homecoming.

At TeamFYNSports, we try to spread the love around when selecting out Sportswriter Player of the Week. On rare occasion, however, one athlete stands out so well we simply can’t help but give it to him more than once. Fannin Rebels inside linebacker Mason Rhodes, who racked up 17 tackles and a sack against Andrews, NC to earn POTW honors, went even further this past Friday night at North Hall. Rhodes was the most aggressive player on the defensive side of the football, recording 18 tackles and 2 sacks on the road against an even better opponent in the Trojans. Leading by example, his hustle sparked the defense on several different plays. Congratulations Rhodes and good luck this week against G.A.C. We look forward to your performance.
