DeCosta Named to Student Advisory Council

Fannin County High

Jessie DeCosta, a senior at Fannin county High School, has been selected by the Georgia State School Superintendent, Richard Woods, to be a member of his 2017-18 Student Advisory Council.  DeCosta was one of 75 high school students selected from a pool of 1,500 applicants.  The middle school council has 65 members from throughout the state, as well.

The members meet four times a year at the State Department of Education in Atlanta to discuss the impact of state education policies, as well as other related educational issues, along with serving as the Superintendent’s ambassadors to their respective schools and participating in service projects to benefit students and schools.

Students were chosen based on the strength of their essay answers, which focused on their ideas for public education as well as their community service experience.   DeCosta is a senior at FCHS who has been active in the Family Community Career Leaders of America where she served as President last year and competed on the national level.  She is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the FCHS School Governance Team, the UCB Junior Board of Directors and is active in her church and youth group. When FCHS Principal Erik Cioffi was asked about DeCosta’s appointment, he replied “Jessie is an outstanding student who will be an asset to the Superintendent’s Council.  We are proud of her for her willingness to take such an active role in her community, her state and public education.”
