Rebels Routed at West Hall: Spartans Spark Sweep

The Fannin County High School Lady Rebels and Rebels basketball teams traveled to West Hall to take on the Lady Spartans and Spartans. Both Rebels teams encountered road woes, as the Lady Rebels lost by four, 40-36 and the Rebels were routed 48-30.The Lady Rebels battled the Lady Spartans throughout the contest. After West Hall drew first blood, Hope Cochran answered with a post up lay up on an assist from Lindsey Humphrey. Fannin took a brief lead with another Humphrey to Cochran connection; however the Lady Spartans answered.

Fannin’s Summer Grice put the Lady Rebels up 6-4; however, a 10-3 run by West Hall saw the home team enter the second quarter with a 14-7 lead.

Logan O’Neal lit up the Lady Spartans early in the second quarter with five straight points to cut the lead to 14-12 with just under six minutes left in the first half; however, West Hall went on a 6-0 run to push the lead to 18-12.

A three from Morgan Chastain cut the lead to 18-15 with four minutes left in the half. After a West Hall bucket, Humphrey’s steal and lay-up made the score 20-17. West Hall led 27-20 at half time.

Fannin’s 6-0 run to start the second half cut the West Hall lead to one, and resulted in a West Hall time out. The Time out worked, as the Lady Rebels’ offense was held to two points throughout the rest of the period. West Hall led 31-28 going into the game’s last period.

The fourth saw Fannin give up four easy points off turnovers, and call a turnover a mere 57 seconds into the period. Head coach, Suzianne Pass, employed the press, and the Lady Spartans appeared to be frustrated, as the Lady Rebels chipped away at the lead little by little.

Molly Chandler’s basket, via a Humphrey assist, cut the West Hall lead to 36-38 with 1:42 left; however the Lady Spartans closed the game with a 40-36 win.

Cochran led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 13 points. She also posted five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Chandler led the Lady Rebels in rebounds with eight, she also had four points, an assist and two steals. Chastain led the Lady Rebels in steals with four. Fannin had 10 steals total.

The boys’ game began with Fannin’s Jonathan Veccio scoring on a put back basket. Veccio hit another basket to give Fannin an early 4-0 lead; however West Hall quickly tied the game, and closed the quarter with a 6-0 run that gave the Spartans a 10-6 lead going into the second quarter.

The Spartans’ press was simply to challenging for the Rebels, as repeated turnovers turned the game into a Spartans spanking. The Rebels got routed, as Fannin fell behind 23-12 at half time.

The third quarter was no better for the visitors as Fannin continued to carelessly turn the ball over repeatedly. Head coach, Scott Eggleston eventually replaced all five starters with 2:15 left in the third.

Fannin fell 48-30. Vecchio led the Rebels in scoring with eight points. He also had seven rebounds and two assists. Jason Arp tied with Vecchio for the Rebels’ lead in rebounds with seven. Tyler Robertson led the Rebels in steals with three.
