Fire Damages Strip Mall in McCaysville

For the owners of the Caterpillar Tobacco Accessories in McCaysville, located at 124 Blue Ridge Drive, the term “smoke shop” brought a whole new meaning when fire struck out and left the point of origin destroyed and the rest of the strip mall reaping smoke damage.The Fannin County Fire Department was dispatched at 10:28 am on May 28th and arrived on the scene shortly after at 10:34 am. The first unit on the scene was unit 614 and advised that the fire was across the street from his location but also advised that a person was still inside the building. The female inside met Mr. Hugh Rogers in the hallway and they exited the back of the building. Another medic unit was called for while the medic unit on the scene attended to her.

Polk County was also called for additional help and water supply. Arriving fire department members divided up into teams of two or three fire fighters and entered the building to extinguish hot spots within the building. The victim was transported to the hospital by Rural Metro Medic Unit. The preliminary diagnosis of the female was smoke inhalation.

The state Fire Marshall is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Responding units from Fannin County include: Engine 4, Medic 4, Engine 5, Engine 14, Engine 15, Ladder 1, Air & Light and Medic 1. . Responding units from East Polk County include: Engine 1, Engine 3, Rural Metro Medic 601 and Rural Metro Medic 603. A total of 42 Fire and EMS personnel responded to a scene that wouldn’t be cleared until sometime later. Officially at nearly 5:00 pm, the scene was secure and all personnel left.
