Fannin Falters at Gilmer: Swept by “Cats”

The Fannin High School Rebels basketball teams traveled to Gilmer County on Friday to take on the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats. This was the second meeting of the year for the two rivals, with the first coming in the annual Tip-Off Tournament earlier in the season. Things didn’t go as planned though, as the Lady Rebels fell 61-48 and the Rebels lost 72-41. The girls’ game got underway when the Lady Rebels controlled the opening tip. Hope Cochran grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back for the first points of the game. She then made a free throw and made a nice cut to the basket for two more points.

The Lady Rebels held a 5-2 lead when Gilmer got hot and went on a 17-2 run. McKenzey Ryder and Anna Ware chipped in with Cochran to cut the Gilmer lead to 22-11 after the first quarter.

Courtney Satterfield was the beneficiary of an offensive rebound when she was fouled on the putback which she made. Molly Chandler also had an and-one opportunity and looked to get her game going in the paint where she is so dominant.

Ryder and Ware finished the quarter with four straight points to pull closer, but the lead had still grown as Fannin trailed 37-22 at the half.

Cochran took over the game for the Lady Rebels in the third quarter as Fannin tried to mount a comeback. She scored ten points in the quarter, along with four more from Chandler and Lindsey Humphrey.

The Lady “Cats” was still to tough to contain though, as the deficit grew yet again. At the end of the third quarter, the Lady Rebels trailed 52-36.

With just one quarter left, Fannin had a steep hill to climb. Behind strong play from Chandler, the Rebels was able to outscore Gilmer in the quarter, but it wasn’t enough. The Lady Rebels fell 61-48.

Hope Cochran led Fannin with 19 points, Chandler finished with 13, and Ryder had 7.

The boys’ game did not go much better for Fannin, and momentum had a lot to do with that.

The Rebels had a hard time slowing down the athletic Bobcat squad as Gilmer jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead. Fannin called a timeout to slow things down, but a dunk by the Bobcats made the gym erupt and the momentum was clearly on the side of the Bobcats.

Sam Kaye and Will Holloway scored eight points between them, and Gilmer led 21-8 after the first quarter.

Austin Williams started the scoring for the Rebels in the second quarter when he grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback. Holloway knocked down a deep corner three-pointer and followed that with another basket for two points.

Brad Norton outhustled the Bobcat defenders and got two points on an offensive rebound putback. With all of this great play, the Rebels still lost ground as Fannin trailed 44-20 at the half.

The Rebels was quite unlucky as Fannin ran into Gilmer’s Joe Bob Charles on the best night of his career. He scored an astonishing 49 points and was unstoppable. The Rebels did a great job of stopping the rest of the team, and played well all around.

In the third quarter, Fannin nearly matched Gilmer. Holloway, Kaye, and Williams put up 13 points and the Fannin defense held the “Cats” in check. Still, the Rebels trailed 59-33 with only one quarter to play.

The fourth quarter started with a free throw from Holloway. Kai Russell, Clay Ware, and Hunter Davenport added seven more points in the quarter, but the Bobcats was too much to handle. When all was said and done, Fannin fell to Gilmer 72-41.

Kaye led the Rebels with 11 points, Holloway followed with 10, and Williams had 8.
