Cougars Clip Eagles’ Wings: “Basin” Beats Eagleville 27-14

The Copper Basin Cougars football team made the long trek to Eagleville to take on the Eagles. The Cougars clipped the Eagles’ wings with a 27-14 victory.After a first quarter that featured each team punting on its first possession, the Cougars took the lead with 7:11 left in the first half. Quarterback, Dylan Boggs, connected with Justin Vasquez; on a 21 yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead after the extra point.
On the ensuing possession, the Eagles attempted a fake punt from the Eagleville 45. Collin Thomas stopped Britt Roberts short of the first, and the Cougars took over on the Eagleville 40.
Boggs finished the 40 yard drive off with a one yard touchdown run. With 1:22 left in the half, the Cougars led 14-0. However, the Eagles flew down the field, answering with touchdown pass with 24 seconds left in the half. “Basin” went into half time leading 14-7.
“Basin” began the second half with a three and out on its first drive. However, the defense held its own on Eagleville’s first drive, as Chris Phelan recovered a fumble to give “Basin” back the ball.
The next “Basin” drive stalled. The Eagles took over on the Eagleville 27 after a turnover on downs. The Cougars defense once again reared its claws, as a sack on third down forced a punt back to “Basin”.
The Cougars took over on the Eagle’s 47 yard line. On fourth and five, Boggs ran eight yards on a fake punt to keep the drive alive.
One play later, Boggs’ 37 yard keeper gave the Cougars first and goal on the Eagle’s two yard line. However, a fumble into the end zone on fourth down gave the Eagles the ball on the Eagleville 20.
The defense again, bailed out “Basin,” as a fumble recovery gave the Cougars the ball on the Eagleville 27 yard line. Boggs again made the Eagles pay, with a one yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown that gave Basin a 20-7 lead with 7:03 left in the game. The extra point was blocked.
The Eagles answered with a 64 yard drive that ended with a five yard touchdown run. With 5:08 left in the game, the Eagles cut the lead to 20-14.
The Cougars secured the lead for good with the last score of the game, a 33 yard touchdown run by Bryce Nicholson that came with 2:56 left in the game.
The Eagle’s last gasp effort was thwarted by the “Basin” defense, as Phelan came up with a sack on third down, and Aaron English broke up the fourth down pass.
Quantavius Brown got the last first down of the game with a with a first down run, that allowed the Cougars to take two knees to end the game with a 27-14 victory.
The Cougars next face Grace on Friday September, 28th, the homecoming game.
