Basin Wins Third Straight As Volunteers Emerge Victorious in Season Opener

The University of Tennessee and the Copper Basin Cougars took the field Friday night, August 31, 2012. The two teams that call the great state of Tennessee their home came away from their respective matchups victorious. Tennessee faced off against NC State, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Georgia Dome, winning 35-21, and the Cougars won their third straight home game 41-14 against Hayesville.The University of Tennessee and the Copper Basin Cougars took the field Friday night, August 31, 2012. Tennessee faced off against NC State, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Georgia Dome, winning 35-21, and the Cougars won their third straight home game 41-14 against Hayesville.
In a run heavy beginning drive for the Cougars, with one pass going to Bryce Nicholson for a 16 yard gain, Justin Vazquez was able to punch the ball into the endzone on a one yard touchdown run.

Two tackles for loss and a sack by Stephen Spargo led to a Hayesville punt. Bryce Nicholson fielded the punt and took it back 44 yards for a Basin touchdown. The Cougars led 14-0.

Basin forced Hayesville into another punt, resulting in a Denzel Brown return deep into Yellow Jacket territory. Brown got the carry for Basin, leading them into the endzone for another Cougar touchdown. After a missed extra point, Basin led 20-0.

Elijah Deal recovered a Yellow Jacket fumble for his Cougars. After some penalties for both teams and a couple complete passes to Stephen Spargo, Dylan Boggs connected on a 27 yard pass to Bryce Nicholson for another Cougar touchdown. Copper Basin now led by a score of 27-0.

The Yellow Jackets fumbled the ball on their next possession and Boggs was there to recover the ball for the Cougars this time. Boggs’ first pass was completed to Aaron English for a nine yard gain. The Cougars continued to run the ball until Dylan Boggs completed a 25 yard touchdown pass to Nicholson, the Cougars led 33-0.

Hayesville caught another case of fumbleitis as they fumbled their next possession and Nicholson recovered it and scored on a 45 yard touchdown recovery. The cougars decided to fake a punt on their way to a successful two point conversion attempt. Basin now led 41-0.

Hayesville was able to get on the scoreboard with an interception of Boggs’ pass that led to a one yard score from the Hayesville running back. Copper Basin still led 41-7 going into the half.

Bryce Nicholson was able to pick off a Hayesville pass coming out of halftime but it did not lead to much more than a punt from the Cougars.

Basin did not score again in the game, but Hayesville was able to score once more after Nicholson fumbled a pass and Dylan Boggs made a touchdown saving tackle. The yellow Jackets would eventually score on a run by Chris Stiles.

Bryce would later make up for his mistake after picking off a Yellow Jacket pass to seal a victory for his Cougars. Copper Basin won this matchup 41-14.

The Tennessee Volunteers traveled to the Georgia Dome for a matchup with NC State in the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game. The Volunteers were supposed to be reeling from the loss of Da’Rick Rogers from the team, but they never missed a beat as Tyler Bray had no trouble finding his new wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, a JUCO transfer, and his old friend Justin Hunter, coming off of a torn ACL last year. The Volunteers left Atlanta with a victory over the Wolfpack, with a score of 35-21.
