The Georgia High School Association sent out an email on Thursday informing everyone that football scrimmages for the year would be canceled and that Competition cheer and One-act play would be moved to the spring.

Even with the cancelation of scrimmages, the GHSA did not decide to move the start date of football season, leaving it at September 4th.

The GHSA’s new tentative start date for competitive cheerleading competitions is now November 21st, with finals February 26th and 27th.

This announcement comes after GHSA executive director Robin Hines had his weekly meeting with his sports medicine advisory board, and after Dr. Kathleen Toomey, the Georgia department of health chairman, expressed her concerns earlier this week about the close contact of football and the spread of the virus.

Other fall sports such as cross country and softball are still on their original schedule.

Football scrimmage games are usually a time where the coaches and players can see where they are at before the beginning of the season starts and see what they will need to work on before actual competition. These scrimmages usually take place 2 weeks before the start of the regular season and do not count towards either teams regular season record.
