Fannin County to provide Pre-K program at every Elementary School next year

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. – According to Director of Student Services Shannon Miller, Fannin County will begin providing a Pre-K program at every Elementary School next year.

Director of Planning, Policy, & Curriculum Darren Danner also spoke with the Board of Education during the meeting on Thursday, May 9, 2019 regarding the purchase of a new security camera system for Fannin County Middle School. The quote is from Ellijay Telephone Company for the amount of $48,501.10. This amount from the vendor is considered a “turn-key” price for all equipment, installation and related services. $30,000 will be paid with Georgia Department of Education School Safety Grant with $18,501.10 paid for by SPLOST (special-purpose local-option sales tax).

Because of 36% of the lighting (32 of 88 lamps) at the Fannin County High School stadium is currently not working, Danner also requested that the lighting be replaced with LED lighting. The Board is currently seeking proposals to this issue, and an update is expected in the near future.

Lastly, Danner also requested approval to a renovate the Fannin County High School main parking lot. The quote is from Johnson Paving for the amount of $49,475.00. This amount from the vendor is considered a “turn-key” price for all demolition, paving and five foot sidewalk. The renovations are expected to be paid with SPLOST funds.

The Board also approved a single-bus field trip request by by Lynn Burch of the Mountain Education Charter High School to go to SunTrust Park in Atlanta, GA for a Braves game on Wednesday, May 29, 2019. The field trip departure time is 4 pm and the return time is 12 am. There are expected to be 25 students and five chaperones attending the trip.

Deputy Superintendent Betsy Hyde

According to Deputy Superintendent Betsy Hyde, East Fannin Elementary School will be using charter funding to cover a new STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) teacher for the next school year.

Hyde goes on to state that Amy Beavers of Pruitt Health Hospice will hold a “Camp Cocoon” on Saturday, May 18, 2019, in which any student who has suffered any sort of loss may attend for counseling.

The Director of Facilities and Maintenance Danny Shinpaugh shared with the board pictures of the construction occurring on the new entrance of the agriculture barn. The road has been fully paved, but the striping isn’t set to occur until Friday, May 17, 2019.
