BLUE RIDGE, Ga. – Severe weather is likely this afternoon and overnight in Fannin County. Throughout the morning and early afternoon hours showers are likely, but the threat of severe thunderstorms will enter our area late this afternoon.

Parameters will be in place around 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. for conditions supporting the development of supercell thunderstorms.

Supercells are the least common form of thunderstorms. For their formation, four key factors must be present: moisture, instability in the atmosphere, lift, and wind shear.

While supercells are the least common, they can potentially become the most violent of thunderstorms. Large hail, strong damaging winds, and tornadoes can accompany these storms.

By 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., a line of strong to severe storms will enter northwest Georgia. The risk of tornadoes will diminish behind this line, but there will still be a risk for strong damaging winds.

Fannin County Emergency Management has been aware of this potential for severe weather and are continuing to monitor the system as it moves into our area.

High winds brings the risk of downed trees and power lines in our area.

If a downed tree is blocking a roadway please call Fannin County’s Non-Emergency Dispatch at 706-632-6022.

If a power line is down along a roadway or blocking a roadway and you feel it is creating an emergency situation, please call 911 to report this issue. If it is not an emergency, please report it to the non-emergency dispatch.

For power lines downed on personal property, please call your electric provider.

If you do come across a downed line, please remember to avoid touching the line with your hand or an object. Also avoid touching anything, such as a car or any other object, that is in contact with the line. Keep children and pets away from fallen electric lines and avoid driving over fallen power lines.
