West Fannin Elementary participated in a forensic exercise that highlighted their STEM program

On March 7, 2017, the 2^nd and 3^rd grade students at West Fannin Elementary participated in a forensic exercise that highlighted their STEM program. Second graders were asked to solve clues to earn pieces of “Spud”, AKA Mr. Potato Head, and piece him back together following a horrible mishap. The clues included activities in math, science and engineering including robots. Third grade used STEMWORKS, a forensic website, to learn how to analyze handwriting samples and to observe differences in various crime scenes. Students and teachers alike had a wonderful time despite the weather.

 

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is an approach to teaching which integrates all disciplines and helps the students learn to be life-long problem-solvers.

 

2^nd-3^rd STEM 18 – 2^nd graders Isaac Watkins (green) and Cayson Mitchell working to solve clue #6 which was using legos, fill in the rectangle without going over any of the edges.

 

2^nd-3^rd STEM 6 – for 3^rd grade Nathan, Caden, and Misty Strickland took part in the genetics lab where they had to analyze their fingerprint compared to the mystery print.
