WFES Events; Red Ribbon Week & 4th Grade STEM

West Fannin Elementary School students and staff celebrated Red Ribbon Week during the week of October 24 – 28, 2016. The theme this year was “You Only Live Once #YOLO Be Drug Free”. Students participated in a different theme daily. On Monday we had Neon Day: Stay Bright and Alert. Say No to Drugs. On Tuesday we had Super Hero Day: Stand up to Drugs. Wednesday was Decades Day: Drugs are Never in Style. Thursday was Pajama Day: Live Your Dreams, Stay Drug Free. Friday we had a special Pink Out Day to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. West Fannin raised $612.61 to the fight against breast cancer! Students also dressed up on Halloween Day with the theme of Scare Drugs Away. A school-wide project was completed in which students wrote down one way to enjoy life on a red sheet of paper and combined them to make a Red Wall in support of Red Ribbon Week. Classroom guidance lessons from school counselor Mrs. Odom also focused on anti-drug or anti-bullying themes for the week.

Mrs. Strobel’s second grade class wearing pink. They also decorated their door in support of Red Ribbon Week and were all treated to an ice cream party for their hard work.

West Fannin hosted a 4^th grade Family STEM Night on October 27^th from 5:30 – 6:30. Parents and students were challenged to design and build a shock-absorbing system that would protect two “astronauts” (aka marshmallows) when they land. They were given 1 piece of cardboard, 1 small plastic cup, 2 regular marshmallows (astronauts), 3 rubber bands, 3 index cards, 10 mini marshmallows, 8 plastic straws, scissors, and tape. Once they sketched and built their spacecraft, it was time to test. They began testing by dropping their spacecraft from a height of one foot (30 cm). If the “astronauts” bounced out or if the spacecraft tipped over, they had to figure out ways to improve their design. Once the parents and students tested, evaluated, and redesigned, we were able to drop spacecraft from one foot, two feet, three feet…until we had to bring out a ladder! Great job parents and students!
