School Board Looks Forward to Another School Year

The Fannin County School Board met on Thursday for their monthly meeting.  This month’s meeting is always a stressful but fun time for the board as students begin making their way back through the halls, with school starting just a few days before. The meeting opened with public comment with Assistant Principal of the High School Theresa Dillard taking the floor.  She spoke on behalf of the High School and gave an update on the front entrance.

Dillard explained that the flowers outside of the entrance where to be dedicated to Ms. Sandra Mercier.

The short, heart-felt dedication brought tears of remembrance to both the past superintendent and current vice-chair of the school board.

In new business:

The board pasted its final spending resolution.  This resolution allows the school system to use one-twelfth of last year’s budget.

The question is: When will the new budget be in and approved?

This month the BOE received the Sales Ratio Study.  Fannin County is listed at a 35.31 for the year 2013.

These are tentative numbers. The final will be made available by the Board of Assessor’s Office on Sept. 2nd.

When the final digest is submitted, the school board can produce its millage rate.

School Board Chair Steve Stanley said:

“I have taken several Department of Revenue Courses and they all preach that you cannot do a millage rate without a proper digest.”

Next month’s September 11th meeting should reveal what the school board’s budget will be.

Toward the end the meeting, the superintendent and board members expressed appreciation to the many staff that ensured a flawless start to the school year.  Superintendent Mark Henson said:

“This year is the smoothest start up I have ever had since taking this office.”
