Approximately 100 people were in attendance at the Fannin County Veterans Memorial Park on Monday to pay their respects to fallen soldiers. Jim Yakubsin, a Vietnam veteran remarked:
“I am here to celebrate those not here, because I got to come home.”
Yakubsin (who arrived in full uniform although he was not part of the program) served 13 months in the Marine Corps during the war. All three of his sons are veterans.
Recalling his fallen friends he said,
“I went in as a private. I lost a lot of them. We went in with 40 and we came out with 20. I am happy and proud and grateful to be here.”
The program began with prayer and the national anthem and ended with a 21 gun salute and Taps.
As one attendee noted:
“This is a perfect day. Not a drop of rain or a dry eye.”
