Rebels Whitewashed at White County

The Fannin County High School Lady Rebels and Rebels basketball team traveled to White County for battles with the Warriors. The home teams took the sweep, due to a persistent pressing defense that procured a 46-38 victory for the Lady Warriors and an 80-32 victory for the Warriors.White County’s constant press proved to be problematic resulting in a plethora of picked off passes for both teams. The Lady Warriors finished with 16 steals while the Warriors had 27.

Despite the Lady Rebels winning the tip, the Lady Warriors scored the first eight points of the game. This in spite of big time blocks from Hope Cochran on back to back White County offensive possessions. Cochran finished the game with five total blocks.

The first quarter ended with White County leading 8-2; however, the second quarter saw the Lady Rebels manage to cut the lead to six, 15-9 at halftime.

The Lady Rebels came out in the second half and just could not overcome the pressing defense of the Lady Warriors. That combined with a multitude of missed lay ups led to a 32-21 deficit going into the fourth, and a final score of 46-38 in White County’s favor.

Cochran had a monster game in the losing effort. She finished with 14 points 10 rebounds (seven defensive), the aforementioned five blocks, four steals and two assists.

Molly Chandler finished second in scoring with eight points. She also cleaned the glass like Windex, pulling down a game high, 13 rebounds (nine offensive). Lindsey Humphrey tied Cochran for the team lead in steals with four, to go with five points and five rebounds.

The boys’ game began with a 15-0 Warriors run that resulted in a 33-9 home team lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw more points from the Rebels, 14, however, the Warriors extended the lead to 50-23 at the half.

The second half proved to be equally problematic as the Rebels’ ball handlers struggled all night with turnovers due to a tenacious defense from the home team, even after the press was called off.

The final score featured Fannin falling, 80-32 to White County. Austin Williams and Will Holloway tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points. Holloway also led the team in rebounds and assists with five and three respectively.
