Henson Addresses Public at Veteran’s Memorial

The reality of Memorial Day isn’t about cookout’s at home, pool parties, shopping and other things that people spend the weekend doing and Fannin County Schools Superintendent, Mark Henson spoke solemnly to those who attended the Memorial Day Ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Blue Ridge about the costs that others have paid for our great freedom. During his address, Henson asked his daughter, Reagan, to hold a map as he spoke.

“This map, belonged to my uncle, Reagan’s great uncle and it hangs in my office so that on any given day, when I think my day is bad, I am reminded it could always be worse”

Henson said. He further explained that the map was a method of escape for soldiers who could have went down while over the ocean. It contained important information such as the ocean currents, their directions, where enemies were stationed and other important, life-saving information. The unique characteristic of the map was that it was printed on silk to prevent the ink from washing away if a soldier got it wet.

In closing, Henson reminded everyone of the sacrifices that each soldier has made and continues to make on our behalf so that we might live the life we have. He also stated that that soldier’s spouse, children, grandchildren, family and friends have also provided a service for our country, though indirectly. Applause filled the air as Henson chanted the words

“GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”.
