Fannin Takes Steps to Beef Up Security

Since the tragedy in Newtown, CT, it is no secret that schools across the nation have tried to increase security measures in an effort to minimize the risk of an event of the sort taking place in their town and Fannin County has proven to be no exception. As promised, FYN has followed the ongoing issue of keeping our children safe and making Fannin’s schools a safer place. And our latest findings revealed that things have came a long way since December. As Superintendent, Mark Henson, set out to do, there will be a School Resource Officer at all five schools within the county. These officers have been placed at every school, with the exception of Blue Ridge Elementary. The reason for the lack of a SRO at BRES is because the city of Blue Ridge has not filled the position of SRO. After an email to City Administrator, Bill Sowers, FYN was told that Mayor Whitener and council member, Harold Herndon were looking over the applications received for the position.

Another step in the right direction is the Board’s unanimous approval of the $38,461.93 bid produced by Automated Creations to update the security at Fannin County High School. Assistant Superintendent, Art Hubbard, stated that this bid included the installation of nearly 50 camers, wiring supplies, mounts, labor and much more. Construction to install these products will begin as soon as the supplies are received by the contractor.

FYN will continue to follow the security upgrades of Fannin’s schools and bring you the latest.
