Fannin Fails to Win War with White County Warriors

The Fannin County High School Rebels football team hosted the Warriors of White County. The visitors escaped with a 35-28 win, as the Rebels come back bid fell short.Fannin faced an early deficit as White County’s quarterback, Will Brock, scored on a quarterback sneak just a minute and five seconds into the first quarter.

The Rebels answered right back with a 55 yard touchdown pass and catch from Trevor Stone to Noah O’Neal immediately following Jarod Petty’s Rebel recovery of a White County failed onside kick attempt.

Fannin failed to connect on the extra point attempt, leaving the Rebels trailing by one, 7-6, a mere 11 seconds of game time after Brock’s touchdown.

Brock capped off another scoring drive for the Warriors with his second consecutive sneak for a touchdown, putting White County up 14-6 with 6:10 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing drive, the Rebels faced a fourth and two on the White County 47 yard line. A fake punt direct snap to Stone gave the Rebels the first down; however, the next three Fannin plays all gained negative yardage resulting in a fourth and 26.

The next Warriors drive was cut short by Noah O’Neal’s fumble recovery on the Rebels’ 47 yard line. Fannin was unable to pick up a first down and eventually punted back to White County.

On first and 10 from the White County 25, Maurice Sutton took a pitch from Brock and raced 67 yards to the Fannin eight yard line. Peyton Satterfield saved the touchdown; however, Brock eventually snuck it in the end zone for his third one yard rushing touchdown of the day.

With 10:07 left in the first half, Fannin faced a 21-6 deficit. The deficit quickly grew, as a dropped snap on a punt attempt, recovered by White County, gave the Warriors first and goal from the Rebels’ four yard line.

Brock picked up his fourth rushing touchdown with yet another quarterback sneak. The sneak gave White County a 28-6 lead that the Warriors would take into half time.

The first drive of the second half featured Fannin finding some rhythm, as O’Neal’s second touchdown catch of the day, a 48 yard bomb, capped off a 78 yard drive. After another failed Fannin extra point, the Rebels cut the lead to 28-12.

The Warriors answered right back on the next drive with a 33 yard touchdown reception by White County’s Andrew Bergin. The score gave White County a 35-12 lead with 8:30 left in the third quarter.

On the next drive Fannin moved the ball down to the White County 30 yard line, before a sack/fumble recovered by the Warriors ended the drive.

On the ensuing White County drive, all hope seemed to be lost as Bergin raced 44 yards to the end zone. However, a block in the back penalty erased the touchdown. The Rebels’ defense held, as Satterfield’s sack on fourth down gave Fannin the ball back on the Rebels’ 29 yard line.

The Fannin faithful rose to their feet on the next drive when Stone hooked up with Satterfield for a 43 yard gain that gave the Rebels the ball on the White County 18 yard line. However, the drive stalled as the Warriors defense forced a turnover on downs.

The Faninn held White County to a three and out as the Rebels’ offense got the ball back on the White County 40. On first and 10, Stone hooked up with Beaver for a 40 yard touchdown pass. A completed two point conversion pass to O’Neal cut the lead to 35-20 with 6:22 left in the game.

A fumble recovery by Fannin’s Joseph Sanders gave the Rebels the ball back on the Fannin 28 with just under five minutes left in the game.

The Rebels capitalized when Stone connected with Satterfield for a 48 yard touchdown throw and catch. Another two point reception by O’Neal cut the lead to seven, 35-28.

However, the Rebels had no more time outs, which allowed the Warriors to go in victory formation and take knees until the time ran out. Fannin next travels to West Hall on Friday September 28.
