FBI may Investigate Local Cyber Attack

ETC learned of a cyber attack late Thursday night and immediately began working through the night to find the source of the unwelcome invasion and isolate it. FYN spoke with ETC early Friday morning confirming the attack. The authorities had been contacted immediately for assistance. According to the Sheriff, the investigation could be complicated and would probably include calling in the FBI. Later today we received the following statement from a representative of the local company.

“ETC has discovered that an individual purposely accessed the modems of a limited number of subscribers in order to obtain their internet login credentials. In some cases, these credentials would allow the individual to access the subscriber’s email. The issue is remedied simply by changing the account password. ETC cannot provide specific details about the incident and the investigation as it may interfere with the criminal investigation. ETC has taken all immediate and appropriate steps to address the situation, including contacting local law enforcement and the FBI. ETC has changed the passwords of each affected subscriber’s account and attempted to notify each affected subscriber directly. Although we believe that the person did not obtain any personal information from ETC, we are being overly cautious in notifying potentially affected subscribers to take necessary precautions, including monitoring their email and bank activity, and changing their passwords.”
