During the February 9th Board of Education meeting last week, Fannin County High School Principal Erik Cioffi announced to Superintendent Mark Henson and the board that two schools in the system won prestigious awards.East Fannin Elementary School won the Gold SSAS (Single Statewide Accountability Award), while Fannin County High School won the Platinum. Georgia Schools are awarded this recognition on four levels: Platinum, Gold. Silver and Bronze, Platinum being the highest level.

“We’re extremely proud of the students in the high school and staff,”

Cioffi said, adding,

“We know it wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of the middle school and elementary schools, so we’re grateful for everything the system has done.”

SSAS awards recognize schools that show improvement. At the high school level, the state recognizes schools showing improvement over a period of time on the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT), and at the primary level, improvement on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) score.

In order to win the Platinum, the highest award, Fannin County High School made Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) for three consecutive years, showed 35 percent or more students exceeded the standards on GHSGT, and placed in the 98th percentile for meeting and exceeding standards in the GHSGT. Fannin was one of eight schools in Georgia that received the award.

Cioffi also said that in the past few weeks, the high school has received five awards received for the mock trial competition, sent 18 students to the Skills USA Regional Competition, where 16 of the students placed first and two placed third, and received the Georgia Advanced Placement Challenge Award

For its part, East Fannin Elementary was one of 14 schools in Georgia to win the 2011 gold SSAS. East Fannin received the award for showing the greatest improvement on CRCT scores, making AYP for two consecutive years, having 30 percent or more students meet and exceed standards on the CRCT score, and placing in the 97th percentile for meeting and exceeding standards on the CRCT.

“I wanted to take a moment also and thank our board members for your continued support,”

Cioffi said after the announcement. On behalf of the high school, Cioffi presented each board member with a commemorative T-shirt to show the school’s appreciation to the board for all of its support. The shirts, Cioffi explained, were provided by Jostens and donations from the Academic Booster Club. Superintendent Henson and the board members gratefully received the gifts.

“We thank you for what you do,”

Cioffi said to Superintendent Henson and the board members.
