Our Obsession With Utopia

As the Bible says, “That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9 NASB). The truth certainly applies to the idea of a Utopian society. Utopia is nothing new. The idea began as soon as man was expelled from the garden. Throughout history attempts to create Utopia have come and gone. All have ended in failure and usually have resulted in the death of many.

Think about some of the recent historical attempts to create a Utopia. There was the Soviet Union, AKA “The Worker’s Paradise.” Tens of millions lost their lives and communism has been responsible for the death of hundreds of millions worldwide. And then there was Hitler’s 1000-Year Reich that lasted less than ten, after millions were exterminated (How many exactly depends on who you ask).

Today, there is a new, fresh obsession with the idea. This might be the first time in human history when so much of the world is obsessed by the idea of a man-made Utopian society. Socialism is on the front burner of the world’s mind it seems, even here in the good old USA. The “Wall Street Occupiers” are certainly in favor of it.

One fairly new attempt, since 1992, to have a worldwide Utopia is in the form of the United Nations “Agenda 21.” Usually one will not hear this term. They will hear terms like “sustainable development,” “historical preservation,” “green zones,” “ecological diversity,” and even “Mother Earth.” Yes Earth Worship is back with a passion.

The bottom line is that Agenda 21 is a worldwide attempt to bring every nation under control through environmental initiatives. Through taxation, regulation, impact fees, and zoning, Mother Earth will take precedence over mankind. Animals and plants will have more rights than we do. There are a great number of other videos available if you want to really understand what is going on right here and now. If you have the time and patience you can order the actual 40-chapter document from the UN bookstore and read it (Boring!). Over 600 U.S. cities have already signed on as have three Presidents.

Now before we wax conspiratorial, let me emphasize that God is in control. He has never allowed a worldwide Utopia. The fact is man cannot create one. Only God can. We can’t return to the Garden as much as we’d like to, but we can guarantee our acceptance into God’s next Paradise after death. The question is are you going? Do you know Christ? If not, you won’t be going there. Why not make sure right now.

Jesus gives us this assurance: “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.” (John 6:37).
