FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are investigating the death of a Belgian draft mule found along a roadway in Fannin County under circumstances that have raised concerns among local residents.
According to a statement from Cowgirl Up Stables, the animal, identified as “Big Jon,” was discovered deceased on Old Quarry Road, a heavily traveled route in the Mineral Bluff area. The owners reported a significant amount of blood at the scene and said the condition of the animal suggests the death was not from natural causes.
It was later discovered that Big Jon suffered from two bullet wounds.
The incident is believed to have occurred between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on April 8. Security camera footage reviewed by the owners reportedly shows a vehicle stopped at the location for an extended period during that timeframe. The vehicle is now a focus of the ongoing investigation.
The Fannin County Sheriff’s Office has been notified and is working to gather additional evidence, including identifying the vehicle seen in the footage and determining the circumstances surrounding the animal’s death.
Local residents, particularly those with livestock or pets, are being urged to remain vigilant. Community members are encouraged to monitor their animals closely and report any suspicious activity or unfamiliar vehicles in the area.
Investigators are also asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone who was traveling along Old Quarry Road during the relevant time period and may have dashcam or home surveillance footage is encouraged to come forward.
A reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
No further details have been released as the investigation remains ongoing. Check back with FYN for updates in this case.
