Fannin County Lady Rebels Triumph to Win GHSA State Championship

Macon, GA – The Fannin County Lady Rebels made history on March 8, 2025, as they emerged victorious in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class A Division 1 girls’ basketball state championship, defeating the Banks County Lady Leopards 51-42. The win, held at the Macon Centreplex, secured the Lady Rebels’ first state title in over two decades and capped off an extraordinary season.

A Strong Second-Half Push

The game was closely contested in the first half, with both teams exchanging leads. Banks County held a slim 23-20 advantage at halftime, thanks to their aggressive defense and fast-paced offense. However, Fannin County made key adjustments in the locker room and came out strong in the second half. Their defense tightened significantly, holding Banks County to just 19 points after the break.

Fannin County’s relentless pressure forced several turnovers, and their transition game was in full force, leading to easy baskets. This defensive resurgence proved pivotal as the Lady Rebels slowly pulled away, eventually securing the 51-42 win.

Key Players Lead the Charge

The Lady Rebels’ victory was marked by several standout performances. Senior guard Olivia Harrison was the team’s spark, contributing a game-high 18 points, along with 6 rebounds. Her leadership on both ends of the court helped steady the Lady Rebels when the game seemed to be slipping away.

Junior forward Emma Clark also played a crucial role in Fannin County’s success, contributing 14 points and 8 rebounds. Clark’s versatility allowed her to impact the game in multiple ways, from scoring in the post to stepping out for key mid-range jumpers.

Banks County’s Determined Effort

While Banks County fell short, their effort was nothing short of commendable. The Lady Leopards played an excellent first half, with sophomore guard Taylor Johnson leading the way. Johnson scored 12 points and was instrumental in helping Banks County take a lead into the locker room. However, after the break, the Lady Leopards struggled against Fannin County’s tightened defense and couldn’t regain their rhythm.

Coach Jason Gibson praised his team’s resilience, saying, “We came out strong in the first half, but Fannin County’s defense in the second half was just too much for us. We couldn’t find a way to break their press, and that ultimately hurt us.”

Coach Ryan Chastain’s Historic Victory

For Fannin County’s head coach, Ryan Chastain, this win was especially meaningful. Not only did it mark his first state championship as a head coach, but it also held personal significance. Chastain is married to Amanda Chastain, a former Lady Rebels player who won a state title in 1999. Reflecting on the win, Coach Chastain shared, “Winning this championship means a lot to me, especially with the history of this program. Now I get to have a state championship ring just like Amanda’s. It’s a special moment for our team and for my family.”

A Bright Future for Fannin County

With this victory, the Lady Rebels added another chapter to their storied basketball history. The win gives Fannin County their third state championship in school history, adding to titles won in 1993 and 1999. The team’s success has been built on years of hard work, and the championship is a testament to the dedication of the players, coaches, and the entire Fannin County community.

As Fannin County celebrates this monumental achievement, the Lady Rebels’ victory has set the bar high for future seasons, and the program looks poised to continue its success for years to come.
