The Fannin Rebels football team hosted the Gordon Lee Trojans last Friday to take their tenth consecutive win of the year and the title of Region Champions in the 30-27 battle.

The Rebels got on the board after a handful of runs, a 27 yard run by Lawson Sullivan, a 26 yard pass to Tucker Dockery, and a one yard run by Carson Callihan to get in the end zone. Matthew Ponton added an extra point making the score 7-0 with 7:12 in the first quarter.

Gordon Lee answered quickly with a breakaway 74 yard run to the goal line. Their extra point was good tying the game in just two minutes.

Callihan and Sullivan dominated the run game to get the ball in Trojan territory. Two Braden Taylor catches put the Rebels in the end zone, and with Ponton’s extra point, the Rebels regained the lead, 14-7, with just second left in the first quarter.

After forcing the Trojans to punt away after three plays, Sullivan took the ball 65 yards to the end zone adding another Rebel score. Ponton’s extra point gave the Rebels a 21-7 lead with 10:43 in the second quarter.

The Trojans chipped away at the yardage with short passes and runs to put the Gordon Lee quarterback in the end zone. The Rebels worked to block the extra point making the score 21-13 with 6:48 left in the half.

A sack that caused a loose ball at midfield gave Gordon Lee the ball back and they capitalized with a touchdown. With their PAT, the score was 21-20 with a minute and a half left in the first half.

The Trojans intercepted a Rebel pass but weren’t able to capitalize on the turnover late in the second quarter.

In the second half, Cooper Born, CJ Reece, and Braden Taylor dominated the defense end for the Rebels, but with just under two minutes left in the third quarter, Gordon Lee powered their way into the end zone to take their first lead of the night. With their extra point, the score was 27-21.

The Rebels were forced to settle for three on the next drive as Ponton booted a field goal through the uprights to make the score 24-27 with just under nine minutes left in the game.

After a scoreless Trojan drive, the Rebels earned another touchdown with a Sullivan pass to Weaver who ran it 66 yards for the score. The extra point attempt was no good making the score 30-27 with 2:57 left in the game.

After battling for yardage with a few quick passes, Born read the Trojan pass and picked off the ball with 20 seconds left in the game to secure a 30-27 win, the Region Championship, and an undefeated regular season.
