Lady Rebels place first in tournament

For the championship game of the Thanksgiving Tournament, the Lady Rebels took on the Lady Bobcats. Fannin and Gilmer were both undefeated in the tournament and fought until the end for the trophy.

Fannin started with the ball as they took no time to get the lead as Saidee Collins had a move on the block to put Fannin ahead 2-0. Morgan Holt was able to get the ball back for Fannin and put a layup on the board to extend the lead 4-0. Gilmer slowly started to trail behind Fannin as they had no problem driving the lane for a layup, making a shot on the block, and making 3 free throws to give the Lady Bobcats a 7-4 lead. Becca Ledford was able to drive to the basket to put Fannin 1 point behind Gilmer with a score of 6-7. The Lady Cats were able to extend their lead with a jump shot to end the first quarter with a score of 9-6. 

Sophomore, Abby Ledford, led Fannin in scoring for the night as she earned 11 points overall. Morgan Holt trailed right behind as she added 9 points to the Rebel’s score for the night. Reagan York got after it as she contributed two free throws to Fannin’s score and had an assist to Morgan Holt who made a layup to put Fannin behind by 1 point with a score of 18-17. Before the buzzer sounded to go into halftime, Prisila Bautista made two free throws to go along with her made basket to tie the game 19-19!

The Bobcats were the first to get points on the board in the second half and take the lead over Fannin. Mackenzie Johnson showed off her hustle as she rushed down the floor and drew fouls to earn four points from free throws. Ledford looked inside to the Rebel’s posts and found Saidee Collins who scored 4 points for the night and tied the game 27-27. Gilmer was once again able to get the lead and ended the third quarter with a score of 31-30. 

Natalie Thomas was the one to put the Rebels ahead as she drew two fouls in a row and added 2 free throws to the scoreboard for a 32-31 lead. Becca Ledford had grit as she would drive right through the defense to make her way to the basket and earn 3 points for the night. Neither team was giving up on the ball game and you could tell by their performance on the court. When one team would score, the other would respond with their own made baskets. With 6.6 seconds left on the clock, the Bobcats threw the ball in under the basket and passed around for and open shot but found themselves too late as the clock wound down on the Lady Rebels 40-39 victory for first place in the tournament!

Fannin’s victory puts their overall record at 4-1. Catch the Rebel’s next game on December 3 starting at 6pm as they travel to Dawson County High School to take on the Tigers for their first region game of the season!
