Betty Ruth Thurman, age 81, of McCaysville, passed away December 16, 2018, in Winterville, GA. Mrs. Thurman was born August 9, 1937, in McCaysville, GA, and lived there until 2015 when she moved to Athens to be closer to her daughter. She was a member of First Baptist Church of McCaysville and a member of the ladies “Stitches of Love.” While in this group she crocheted over 250 helmet liners for the military. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Thurman, Jr., and her mother, Ophelia Griggs Galloway.
Survivors include a daughter, Marla (Peter) VanDyck; sister, Judy (Ronnie) Holloway; grandsons, Peter (Stephanie) VanDyck, Jr., Robert VanDyck; and granddaughter, Virginia VanDyck.
Funeral services: Saturday, December 22, 2018, at 11:30 am at the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Matthew McDaniel officiating. Interment will follow in the Crestlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers: Peter VanDyck, Jr., Robert VanDyck, Pat Holloway, Brandon Holloway, Ryan Holloway, Tony Deal, Brett Deal, Bobby Hellerstedt, Evan Hellerstedt, Kent Brooks, and Scott Brooks.
The family will receive friends at the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home of McCaysville, Saturday, December 22, 2018, from 10:30 am – 11:30 am.
