Fannin Fights in First Home Game

On 11/30, the Union County Lady Panthers traveled to Fannin County to take on the Lady Rebels for their first home game of the season. Union had just come from a victory over Towns while Fannin hoped to pull one off after their previous loss to Cass.

Morgan Holt jumped for the ball at tip off where she gained possession for Fannin. Holt led Fannin in scoring for the night where she earned thirteen points with her great ball handling skills. Sophomore, Abby Ledford, was tied with Holt in scoring where she also earned thirteen points with her hustle. As the Rebels scored most of their points from drives to the basket, the Panthers earned the majority of theirs from free throws. Union closed out the first quarter of play with a 15-8 lead over Fannin.

Fannin picked up their intensity at the beginning of the second quarter when they started to drive towards the basket and draw fouls. Sadie Collins and Emily Beavers went two for two on their foul shots for the night. Collins contributed the two points to Fannin’s score while Beavers added four points with a jump shot inside the key. Although they were behind, the Rebels were fighting hard to make a comeback and closed out the first half only six points behind Union with a score of 26-20.

The Rebels started to adjust as they went into the third quarter. Fannin started to play full court man to man to make it harder for Dawson to score. With Union ahead 33-30 with 1:40 left in the quarter, Becca Ledford shot a three pointer and tied up the game. The Panthers continued to put points on the board with shots on the block an claimed a 38-33 lead over Fannin to end the third quarter.

Fannin showed off their outside shooting skills as they made three, three point shots above the key. Abby Ledford tied up the game 44-44 with one of those three’s, just for Union to pull ahead with foul shots. The Rebels managed to put themselves two points behind the Panthers in perfect scoring position when Fannin fouled. Despite Fannin’s great comeback, the time on the clock ran out as Union had a 50-48 lead over the Rebels.
