Caroline Carder from Sisson Dupont & Carder came to Mrs. Danner’s 4th grade math classes at West Fannin Elementary to discuss their ideas for an ongoing STEM project. 4th grade teachers presented them with the idea that there was not enough shade on the playground and asked them how the problem could best be solved. Teachers and students then began brainstorming and came up with a gazebo/outdoor classroom to enhance student learning at West Fannin while providing shade. Mrs. Carder came to assist the students with the design process.
She shared how she works with her clients in helping them design their dream homes by collecting ideas and dreaming big. Each 4th grade homeroom is currently collecting, gathering and brainstorming ideas that they can incorporate into a gazebo/outdoor classroom that will provide interactive learning opportunities for all students. The students will then present their ideas and Mrs. Carder will assist us in developing a final plan.
TVA Curtis Switch Project
Jeremy Davis presented a challenge to our 5th grade students in connection with the upcoming TVA Curtis Switch Project. He asked the students for ideas on how to construct a boat ramp into the river using concrete, but the concrete was not allowed to escape into the river. He also wanted to know how they would get their ramp into the river while keeping in mind erosion issues when the grading is completed for the ramp. Students were challenged to protect the banks of the river with their design.
