Cheek Commits to Methodist University

Another Fannin County High School athlete signed a letter of intent to play college sports yesterday, as Taylor Cheek put his name on the dotted line to play soccer for the NCAA Division III Methodist University Lions.

For Cheek, the journey to Fayetteville, N.C. started when he began kicking a soccer ball at the age of two. He was hooked from the outset.

His parents were unable to attend the signing, due to being at work out-of-state. This made the moment bittersweet for Cheek.

“It’s kind of mixed emotions, because my parents aren’t here,” Cheek admitted. “And now, I’m going to be on my own.”

A native of Conyers, Ga., Cheek has had a storied soccer career. He arrived in Blue Ridge in eighth grade, where he immediately started playing for the middle school Rebels. After attending FCHS his freshman and sophomore year, Cheek relocated to Alcovy High School in Covington, Ga. for his junior year, before return to don the Rebel blue again for his senior season.

His soccer career includes a Rookie of the Year Award his freshman year, a Second-Team All-Region Recognition and Offensive Player of the Year Award his sophomore year, First-Team All-Region at Alcovy last season and repeated the feat when he returned to Fannin for his senior year.

After receiving offers from Young Harris and Wingate University, Cheek settled on Methodist University because of his desire to compete.

“I didn’t really want to get stuck playing JV my first year (of college),” Cheek explained. “Methodist also has the program I want to study: Sports Medicine.”

Cheek also wanted to recognize three important people in his life that contributed to his achievement.

“I want to thank my parents, Heather and Bo Cheek and my grandma, Margaret Laskey, of course,” Cheek said. “All of their dedication and hours spent taking me places got me where I am.”
