Fannin Soccer Seasons End with State Bids

The Fannin County High School soccer program finished the 2016 season on a high note, as both the Rebels and Lady Rebels advanced to the Georgia High School Association state playoffs.

Lady Rebels

The Fannin girls started their state playoff appearance with a 1-0 victory over Coahulla Creek April 29.

Shelby Baze scored the lone goal in the match off a corner kick from Ella Senoff, five minutes before halftime.

“(This is) the best we passed the ball all season and was an overall awesome team effort,” said head Lady Rebels coach Chris Thigpen. “Those cats played their tails off for each other and left everything they had out there. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The Lady Rebels run through state ended in the second round last Wednesday, on the road against Peach County. The Lady Trojans shut out Fannin, 3-0.

“All in all, the girls fought their butts off and didn’t lay down for them,” Thigpen said. “It was a great season and an incredible group of girls. The seniors: Brit Abt, Emma Long, Emma Malarkey, Star Daniel, Shelby Baze, Benai Bennett, Alicia Reeves and Leah Clark were awesome to work with this season and did a great job leading the team. Finishing 4-2 in the region and making the Sweet 16 were great accomplishments. We will have a very tough region next year, but I hope the momentum created this season will propel us forward for years to come.”

The Lady Rebels finish the 2016 season with an overall record of 9-10-1.

Rebels

The Rebels fell in the first round to Calhoun April 28, 2-1.

In the hole 2-0 at halftime, Santos Arellano cut the Calhoun lead in half with a Rebels goal. However, Fannin was unable to produce any further offense and dropped the match.

“I am really proud of the team this year,” said head Rebels coach Bubba Gibbs.”They worked hard, played hard and had a great season. This is the first winning boys soccer team in FCHS history and the first state playoff team.  I have really enjoyed coaching these young men, and I believe they will all do great things in life.”

The Rebels complete the 2016 season with an overall record of 9-7-3.
