Gaming the Library

Ronald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and other children and adult books, says, ”Life is more fun if play games.”  In the spirit of Ronald Dahl, Fannin County Public Library hosts a board game day on the last Saturday of each month.  Jan. 25th was the the library’s first board game day and this Saturday, Feb. 27th  from 11-1 pm will be its next.

Clare Barton, head librarian for Fannin County Library, started board game day to bring different groups and different generations in the community together and to have some quiet fun in the library.  Frank Scranton, Fannin County resident, came to Barton with the idea of having a monthly board game opportunity at the library.  Scranton said that he loves playing games and always has.  Since he has a lot of games sitting around the house that aren’t being used he thought the library would be a good community center where he could get together with other people and just have fun.  Joyce Norwell (left), pictured with Scranton and Barton, agrees with Scranton.  She came to on Jan. 25th to play because she wanted to get out of the house and have fun.

There are all types of games available for playing on board game day.  The library brings out some from their collection and players are encouraged to bring their games from home to try out in a new crowd.  In January, there were all sorts of games – chess, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Candyland, geometric designs and plenty of cards to go around.  Poker isn’t on the list of games to play, though, because the library doesn’t have a man cave.
