Gilmer Serves Fannin in Season Opener

FCHS Tennis

The Gilmer High School tennis team traveled to Blue Ridge last Thursday to battle against Fannin County High School, in the first match of the season for either school.

The Bobcats and Lady Cats both left Fannin with 4-1 victories under their belts.

Bobcats

In singles action, Dusty Ray bested Alex Prince 6-2, 6-4. Isaac Hensley downed Trevor Neal 6-1, 6-0, while Carter Hice won a hard-fought 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 contest against Paul Walker.

Doubles matches saw Jackson Stolz and Riley Hice defeat Grant and Clayton Carter 6-4, 6-0, while the combination of Blake Cobb and Aaron Walden garnered the only Rebels victory by downing Matthew Bruner and Noah Chastain, 1-6, 2-6.

Lady Cats

Emily Key got Fannin off to a positive start in girls action with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ally Davis. Gilmer responded with Kali Malham fanning Kaylee Tredeau 6-0, 6-0 and Katie Marick defeated Ciadvia Bautista 6-2, 6-3.

Doubles matches ended with Hannah Thomas and Chancey Davis beating Breina and Kenide Rohers 6-0, 6-2 and the duo of Katie Sheahan and Lauren Cole picking up an 8-1 win over McKinzie Moriano and Amanda McDaniel.

“We had several older players missing and hurt so we had to move some of our players to play in spots they were not used to,” head GHS tennis coach Donna Parks explained. “It didn’t seem to matter, though. They all stepped up to the challenge and I was very proud of how well we played. Because the weather has been bad, this was our first match of the season and any time you play a rival like Fannin you want to make a good showing.”
