Ethel Cowart Harper: Obituary

Mrs. , age 95, of Epworth, GA, passed away February 8, 2016 in Cumming, GA. after a brief illness. Born in Copperhill, TN, she was the daughter of the late Glynn Tatum and Myrtle Barnes Cowart. She graduated from Epworth High School in 1940. During her senior year she married the late Alvin Bernard Harper, the love of her life. She was a fulltime homemaker, and stay at home mom for 27 years. In 1966 she took a job as a teaching assistant at Epworth Elementary School, a job she loved and enjoyed for many years. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her husband Alvin to whom she was married for 72 years.

She was actively involved in her church, First Baptist Church of Epworth, for over 60 years. Ethel had a servant’s heart and served the church in numerous capacities.

She was also preceded in death by twin sister Ellen Cowart Nicholson, sister Mary Cowart and brothers J.D. Cowart, Glynn Cowart, John Cowart and Robert Cowart.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Martha Harper of Jasper, GA; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Virginia Harper of Seaside, CA; son Rick Harper of Reading, PA; brother Wade Cowart of Chattanooga, TN; grand children and spouses, Jeff and Karen Harper of Gautier, MS; Amy and Michael von Borstel of Woodstock, GA; Sabrina and Brad Bass of Braselton, GA; Christina Harper of Alemeda, CA; nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Epworth with Dr. Tom Jordan officiating. Music will be provided by Doug Simonds. Interment will follow in the First Baptist Church of Epworth Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be: Steve Cheatham, Jimmie Foster, Eddy Garrison and Earle Jenkins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations in memory of Ethel be made to the Missions Fund, First Baptist Church of Epworth, P.O. Box 187 Epworth, GA 30541.
