Every year during the first two weeks of May, students around the world are administered Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. Students enroll in AP classes for three primary reasons: (1) to build confidence in their abilities to meet the academic challenges of college; (2) to increase college success rate as studies show students who succeed in AP classes typically experience greater success in college than similar students who do not participate in AP classes; and (3) to earn college credit while in high school which allows them more options in college (advanced courses, study abroad, graduating early).
Fannin County High School (FCHS) administered 81 exams during the testing window. Results from these exams arrived in July and FCHS students excelled. The overall pass rate for FCHS was 65% while the Georgia Pass Rate was 57% and the Global Pass Rate was 61%. The pass rate is determined by the number of students receiving a score of 3 or better on their exams with scores ranging from 1 to 5. Twenty-seven FCHS exams received a score of “3”, Thirteen exams received a score of “4’, and Thirteen exams received a score of “5”.
CollegeBoard oversees the AP Program and annually recognizes students who have taken multiple AP courses and excelled throughout their high school careers.
“AP Scholar” status is awarded to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. FCHS AP Scholars are: William Baldwin, Colton Carpenter, Alex Chastain, Carly Hellerstedt, Foster Holt, Taylor Lents, Edith Mares, Travis Smith and Jennifer Taylor
“AP Scholar With Honor” status is awarded to students who receive an average score of 3.5 on all exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. FCHS AP Scholar With Honor is Courtney Queen.
FCHS Principal, Erik Cioffi, stated how proud he was of the students, staff and community for their commitment to the AP Program. Everyone benefits from a strong and successful program. AP courses are college level courses and are challenging for students. The goal is to increase the awareness of the advantages and opportunities of AP classes and therefore increase the number of students enrolled. FCHS is proud to announce the number of students currently enrolled in AP classes for the 2015-16 School year is 160.
