Cherokee NC Sheriff’s Office Press Releases

Murphy, NC— Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the June 23rd, 2015 arrest of Richard McKinley Gilbert Jr., a 26 year old Murphy North Carolina man for stealing a firearm.

On June 23rd, 2015 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was conducting an investigation into the larceny of a firearm. As the investigation progressed Gilbert became suspect in the larceny. When Officers conducted a wants/warrants check information was received that there had been an Order For Arrest for Gilbert for outstanding Child Support in the amount of $4,236.00. Gilbert was taken into custody. While continuing in the investigation Officers were able to locate the firearm that had been recently reported stolen. Information was made know that Gilbert had previously been convicted of a felony and was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Gilbert was taken before the North Carolina Magistrate where he was charged with Larceny of a Firearm, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon as well as the outstanding Child Support amount. Gilbert was given a $10,000.00 secure bond and must make a purge payment of $4,236.00 before his release is authorized. Gilbert is currently detained in the Cherokee County Detention Center pending a July 01st, 2015 District Court date.

Sheriff Palmer “This was some good work by members of my office. They worked together to quickly locate and retrieve the stolen firearm and to get it out of the hands of a convicted felon.”

MAN BARRICADES HIMSELF IN RESIDENCE TO AVOID ARREST

Murphy, NC— Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the June 20th, 2015 arrest of Ronald Edward Coleman a 62 year old Murphy North Carolina man for domestic related charges and for charges stemming from a situation where Coleman barricaded himself in a residence attempting to avoid arrest.

On or about June 19th, 2015 complaint was made with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office alleging that Coleman had assaulted a female, took her truck without permission and interfered with emergency communications. Upon further investigation warrants for the arrest of Coleman were issued.

On or about June 20, 2015 Deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office went to a residence where Coleman was believed to be. While attempting to arrest Coleman on the outstanding warrants, Coleman retreated inside the residence locking the door, barricaded himself in and then made threats to kill the officers if they did not leave.

The area surrounding the residence was secured through the use of several law enforcement and public safety agencies. Through the use of a crisis negotiator Coleman finally surrendered and was arrested on the warrants and taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center. Coleman was arrested for Interfere with Emergency Communications, Assault on a Female, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Misdemeanor Breaking or Entering, Communicating Threats and Resisting Public Officer

Coleman was taken before the North Carolina Magistrate who set a $20,000.00 secure bond. Coleman is currently detained in the Cherokee County Detention Center pending a July 08th, 2015 District Court date.

Sheriff Palmer “I want to thank all the public safety agencies that responded. The help of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Murphy Police Department, Cherokee Police Department SWAT and Negotiator, Murphy Fire Department, Cherokee County EMS, and North Carolina Department of Transportation was invaluable. This was a very dangerous situation but ended with a great conclusion.”
