WFES Second Graders Learn About Water

The members of the Education Committee from the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center went into the classrooms of West Fannin Elementary School recently. They were there to teach lessons on the many uses of water and water conservation. This is just one of many programs that is offered to local students in kindergarten and grades 1-5.Each second grader participated in a water pollution interactive model which was entitled “Don’t Teach Your Trash to Swim”. Instruction was also provided on water conservation, animals that live in the water and the metamorphosis of the tadpole. Each student also made a rain gauge to take home. We thank Principal Robert Ensley, his Assistant Principal Patricia Adams and the second grade teachers at the school for their support. A special thanks goes to Ms. Tonya Callahan for coordinating this program within the school.

The Education Committee is part of the Community Council at the G.M.R.E. Center. The Community Council was founded in 2003 for the purpose of enhancing the mission of the G.M.R.E. Center. The council emphasizes education, outreach and preservation. Last year, 4,000+ students in Union, Fannin, and Towns County in Georgia as well as Clay and Cherokee Counties in North Carolina either attended programs at the Center or invited presenters into their school.
