Maurice E. Smith, 88 yrs old, passed away on Nov. 10, in Murphy, N.C., where he resided.Maurice was a World War II veteran who served in the Battle of the Bulge. He was born and raised in Newport, N.H.. He was a pioneer in the automated sawmill business that he owned and operated in Greenfield, N.H. He decided Murphy was the place to retire because of the mountains and country living.
He is survived by his wife, Betty B. Smith, his son Douglas P. Smith of Murphy, and his daughter Sandra L. Maynard of Orlando, FL. He has two surviving sisters, Hazel S. White of Claremont, N.H. and Thelma M. Robinson of Granite Falls, N.C, as well as 5 grandsons and 4 great-grandchildren. Per his request he was cremated on Nov.12 at the Cochran Funeral Home in Murphy.
