Proverbs 16:18-21 “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord. The wise of heart is called discerning and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.”
In your presence our Father, we cannot be proud and haughty for you know everything there is to know about us. But before people we put on our show. We demonstrate to them our best traits and hide the dragons within. And then when we are called into question about something that we have said or done, we justify ourselves like a Washington politician.
Everything can look good for a while – and then the fall comes. The mask is off and the truth is known. We stand before you and others with our pride in shambles.

Your word warns us that unholy pride that is self-defensive is like a spiritual bomb. It blows up relationships and reputations. It brings us down to where grace can touch us.

Help us to be wise of heart so that what we are before you – we are before others. Jesus only can make this possible.

Amen.
