Lady Rebels Go Down To The Wire; Boys Fall Short

The Fannin County High School Lady Rebels and Rebels basketball teams hosted the Banks County Leopards. The Lady Rebels procured a 44-41 victory in the final seconds of regulation, while the boys fell 61-47.The ladies, game started out slow for both teams. Lindsey Humphrey and McKenzey Ryder gave Fannin an early edge.

Ryder scored half of the Rebels first quarter points, while Humphrey had a big assist and steal to give the girls a two point advantage,8-6, at the end of one.

Hope Cochran took the challenge of guarding the Leopards’ leading lady. In doing so, Cochran got into early foul trouble. Anna Ware stepped up big for the Lady Rebels with her defensive play throughout the game.

The early Fannin foul trouble allowed the Lady Leopards to get into the bonus early in the 2nd quarter. The fouls combined with the pressing paws of the Lady Leopards’ defense, seemed to frustrate the Fannin team. Trying to get the team to half time with a lead, Ryder hit a big three pointer to give the Ladies in Blue a three point halftime lead, 14-11.

Kayla Chancey kept the Leopards’ frustration level high, as she forced the opposing point guard into multiple five second violations with her aggressive defense.

Humphrey contributed to the frustrations. She grabbed 3 steals in the third quarter and took over at the point guard postion when Chancey got into foul trouble.

Fannin ended the 3rd with a 27-23 lead. The Leopards came out of the gate strong in the fourth with a quick surge to get within three points.

Cochran, Chancey, and Ryder would be in deep foul trouble to start the fourth.

With 7:00 minutes left in the fourth, Fannin would reach the bonus early which caused problems late in the fourth, for Banks.

Cochran and Chancey entered the game with four minutes left to try and bring a spark to the Lady Rebels as the Leopards pulled within one.

Right off the bench Cochran got two points in the paint, while Chancey gave the Banks point guard grief. With two minutes left both Cochran and Chancey fouled out within ten seconds of each other.

Coming down to the wire, Molly Chandler contributed big with a huge fourth quarter three and help from the foul line. Banks got within three with 25 seconds left but the skill of the Rebels was too much.

The Ladies from Fannin look to continue this stellar play as Fannin heads to White County next.

The Rebels started out strong against the guys from Banks. Brandon Jordan received the tip ball for a quick easily lay in. On the next possession the Rebels went right back to Jordan who sank a three to give Fannin a quick 5-0 lead.

The outsized Sam Kaye did a fantastic early job of playing defense on the big man from Banks, Austin Venable, holding him to only two first quarter field goals.

Jordan went on to pick up two more threes along with a Tyler Robertson three to give the guys a 10 point first quarter lead.

Venable stepped up play in the second quarter, scoring eight points. The Rebels had a hard time stopping the baseline reverse. Kaye along with Brad Norton tried to stop the attack as the Rebels went to a two- three zone, looking to clog up paint.

The Leopards out scored the Rebels by seven in the second quarter. Fannin went into the locker room with a slim three point lead at half time with a score of 27-24.

Fannin kept it close with Austin Williams and Jordan leading the way for the team. The Rebels trailed by only two points to start the fourth quarter.

Fannin started the final quarter out strong but failed to keep up with the Banks county point guard, Kendrick Simmons. Simmons scored seven fourth quarter points which was too much for the team to overcome.

The Rebels was outscored 23 to 11 in the fourth. Fannin looks to rebound from the lost as the Rebels head to White on Tuesday.
