Loretta Honea : Obituary

It was her love of traveling the world that found Loretta Hinson Taylor Honea taking her last journey, embarking to the heavens on the morning of January 6, 2014.Recently a resident of Brasstown Manor, in Hiawassee, GA, Ms. Honea spent most of her 16 years in North Georgia on Blairsville’s Wilson Mountain, where her husband, Larry Honea, was a building contractor. High school sweethearts from the Atlanta area, the two were together for five decades before he passed away in 2006.

After retiring from a career as a certified administrative professional with the DeKalb County School System, Loretta immersed herself in her responsibilities as the Registrar for the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Upon her arrival to Union County, she immediately involved herself with the Union County Historical Society where she volunteered to set up many of the displays you see there today, as well as spending hours researching and cataloging records for the Society.

An avid crafter, her favorite hobbies were those involving needles and thread or yarn. She was past president of the ANG of Atlanta and a member of the Embroidery Guild of America. . Here, she will be fondly remembered by her Dogwood Patch Stitching Group, where she still attended monthly gatherings.

Professionally, Ms. Honea was very active. She served as president of the Atlanta Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals in 1977-1978. She was friend and mentor to many young women throughout her career, and was an intricate heart string to a group that call themselves “the 7”, who she continued to be a part of through this past year.

For the past twenty four months, Ms. Honea was dealing with many health challenges. She was dependent on the kindness of many caregivers and was beloved by those who attended to her at the Union County Dialysis Center and Brasstown Manor. She appreciated their care and affection even more.

Her family will hold her memory close to their hearts, including her brothers, Albert Taylor (wife Karen) Centennial, CO, John Taylor, Wellington, FL and sister, Barbara Taylor (husband Tony), Ball Ground, GA. as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 20, 2014 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Dr. Fred Lodge, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of which Ms. Honea was a member, officiating. A reception will follow the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 4 until 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Monday at 3:00 p.m. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Union County Historical Society, in memory of Loretta Honea, would be a special tribute to her for her efforts to preserve our local history.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. Tributes can be left online at www.CochranFuneralHomes.com.
