JV Boys Buck Buford: Avoid Sweep

The Fannin County High School Rebels basketball teams started their new year with a trip to Buford on Friday night. All four teams were in action with the junior varsity boys being the only team to top the Wolves scoring attack on the night, securing a 43-34 victory over the Wolves. It was the first loss of the season for Buford’s JV squad.

The JV Lady Rebels got the night started. The hosting Lady Wolves jumped out to a big 34-7 halftime lead. The Lady Rebels fought back with a 15-7 third quarter run but it was too little too late. The ladies’ final score was 48-28 with Buford being the victor.

Up next for the teams in action was the JV Boys. The highscoring Wolves got off to a slow start as both teams went through three minutes of regulation before scoring.

Buford ended the first quarter with a 10-6 lead over the Rebels. The match-up stayed close as both teams entered the locker room tied halftime with 19 points a piece.

Just like at the half, the teams stayed tied, ending the third quarter at 28 all. The Rebels went on a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter to lead the guys to a 43-34 victory over the Wolves.

The varsity girls played a tough game but after a big Buford third quarter the team fell 50-76.

The Lady Rebels started the game strong. Molly Chandler stepped up guarding in the paint drawing two early charges. Lindsey Humphrey and McKenzey Ryder took over on the fast break plays.

With Buford in a full court press, the ladies turned to Kayla Chancey for her point guard leadership. Chancey tied the game at 15 all to end the first.

During the second quarter the girls turned to Hope Cochran when the Rebels needed a big play. With just seconds before half time, Cochran had a 3 point play to bring the score to 27-29, Buford.

After miscues and turnovers the Rebels walked into the locker room down by three at halftime. The teams looked to be evenly matched until the start of the 3rd. Buford went on 31-10 third quarter run.

This was just too much for the Lady Rebels to recoup from, ending the game with a 50-76 final.

The Rebels came out the gate struggling to hit shots. This made for a long first quarter against the Wolves. At the end of the first the score Buford led 13-1.

Will Holloway got the team rolling in the right direction, scoring four early points in the second quarter. Holloway led the team with seven overall points during the game.

Losing Sam Kaye to injury during the second quarter hurt the defense, due to not having the Rebel’s biggest man in the paint against the towering Wolves.

Tyler Robertson had a big four point play to start the second half, giving the Rebels a spark. Nolan Hicks and Kai Russel helped control the ball up and down the court for the Rebels, but the size of Buford was too much for the team to handle.

The final ended with a 58-24 win in the favor of the Wolves.
