Mr. Sylvester Watkins, age 88, of Blue Ridge, GA passed away December 25, 2013 at his home. Born in Gilmer County, GA he was the son of the late Gordon J. and Bertha Payne Watkins. He served his country during WWII, serving in the United States Navy. He was also a member of Cherry Log Baptist Church. Mr. Watkins was also preceded in death by brothers, Tise and Tate Watkins; sister, Rosie Watkins Haddock; daughter, Karen Ann Watkins; and great grandson, Kayden Emory Olmstead. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed making his own fishing lures.
Survivors include his wife of sixty five years, Thelma Louise Parr Watkins; sons and daughter-in-law, James and Brenda Watkins of Blue Ridge, GA and Joe Watkins of Ellijay, GA; daughters and son-in-laws, Susan Brown of the home, Betty and Fredie Chastain of Blairsville, GA, Linda and Charles Ballew of Blue Ridge, GA, Vernell and Rob Neuwar of Ellijay, GA; brothers, Luther Watkins of Blue Ridge, GA and Eugene Watkins of Ellijay, GA; sister, Ruby Watkins Parr of Blue Ridge,GA; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Worley and Rev. Jeff Fair officiating. Interment will follow in the Young’s Chapel Church Cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Charles Ballew, Kevin Watkins, William Olmstead, Shannon Watkins, Rob Neuwar, and William Mull. Master Nehemiah Watkins will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Full military honors will be provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m.
