Farm Bureau Educates WFES Kindergarten Students

The kindergarten students at West Fannin Elementary school spent some time with employees at Georgia Farm Bureau, learning about the sugar content in many foods they consume on the daily basis. Two kindergarten classes, at a time, ventured to the library to learn about “sometimes foods” and “all the time foods”. The staff from the Georgia Farm Bureau office in Morganton, GA greeted them. To begin with, the kids were excited to see all of the food on the table but they didn’t realize what the purpose of the assembly until they were showed exactly how much sugar was in a variety of foods and drinks that many children consume on the daily basis. Pop tarts, Mountain Dew, caramel flavored rice cakes, Nerds and more were displayed with a series of sugar cubes that reflected how much sugar was in each product. Much to everyone’s surprise, even teacher Valdora Dockery, the caramel flavored rice cake only contains one cube of sugar. That is great considering Nerds and Mountain Dew contained well over ten cubes of sugar.

After discussing the “sometimes foods”, the presentation focused on the “all the time foods”. Students learned about the farm grown vegetables and fruits that they can consume with a significant less amount of sugar and the importance of consuming items from the entire food pyramid. After they discussed the healthy way to eat, they colored a page and drew their own complete meal on their plate. The art work is currently on display at the Farm Bureau office in Morganton.

As they left, each child was given a coloring book, a pack of crayons and an apple for a healthy snack. Overall, the event was a success and the students enjoyed it and learned the appropriate foods to eat on the daily basis.
