East Fannin Celebrates Grandparent’s Day

Grandparent’s Day has multiple origins. Some consider it to have been first proposed by Michael Goldgar in the 1970s after visiting his aunt in an Atlanta nursing home. He spent over $10,000 of his own money in lobbying efforts, making nearly 20 trips to Washington D.C. over a period of seven years to meet with legislators to have the day officially recognized. With Grandparent’s being celebrated Sunday, September 8th, the staff at East Fannin Elementary School wanted to provide kindergarten students the opportunity to celebrate with their grandparents by having cookies and juice on Friday, September 6, 2013.

The program began with the children making their way to the gym, taking their place on the risers and performing two songs to impress their families. After the performance, they exited to the cafeteria where they anxiously awaited their grandparents’ arrival to chow down on some cookies and juice.

Overall, the event was a success and there were many smiling, happy faces in the crowd.
