A Letter From BRES Principal Regarding School Councils

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The Georgia General Assembly recognizes the need to improve communication and participation of parents and the community in the management and operation of public schools. The General Assembly believes that parent and community support is critical to the success of students and school.

In accordance with Georgia House Bill 1187, the Fannin County School System is continuing the process of electing school councils at our local schools. School councils function as advisory bodies and provide advice, recommendations, and assistance concerning school improvement and student achievement.

To be eligible to serve as a member of your child’s school council, you must have a child who will be enrolled in that school for the time that you are to serve. This excludes parents who are employed at this particular school, but does not exclude parents who are employed in other schools within the local system. You may serve only during the time that your child is a student at that school and that needs to be a minimum of a one year term.

The time commitment of school council members is as follows: two-year term of office, quarterly meetings and training programs. Georgia law prohibits council members from receiving any remuneration/payment.

The school council members at Blue Ridge Elementary School serve staggered terms. We have two openings this year. One opening is for a parent representative and the other is for a business representative. If you are interested in becoming a member of your child’s school council, you must submit your name to the school’s principal by April 15, 2013. Your name will be added to the list of nominees, and there will be an election (by ballot) at the school on April 19, 2013 from 7:30-8:30 AM. Please call me to submit your name or to ask any questions concerning school councils.
