Tithing Your Way to Victory

You may not agree with me but I truly believe, based on Scripture, that we pay horrendous taxes in this country because we don’t tithe. Ever heard that before?Tithing is a controversial issue, I know. Some folks, like me, believe we are still required to tithe, that the tithe is an assumed practice in the New Testament. Offerings are given only after the tithe is paid.

Today, many Christians think that since we now have a better covenant, and God has blessed us more, that we should show our gratitude by giving God less. I don’t get that line of thinking but I won’t debate it here.

What I do want to do is maybe shed some new light on the blessing, power, and need of tithing. Tithing isn’t just something we’re supposed to do because God commands it, even though that is reason enough. Tithing is a means of grace, a tool to plant the Gospel, and a weapon of spiritual warfare.

God does everything with a purpose. God has reasons for wanting us to tithe. We all know it is not because He needs the money. He needs nothing.

Allow me to share why I think tithing is so important today. I will also share why I think we are suffering from such oppressive taxes and growing government.

First, let us look at the familiar Malachi 3-8-11 passages concerning tithing. Here God makes two specific promises. He says that if we bring the whole tithe into His storehouse, He will open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing that we cannot even contain. Plus, He promises to rebuke the devourer.

The other side of the coin is that if we don’t tithe we are robbing God. “You are cursed with a curse for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you.”(God’s words not mine). God says we who do not tithe are cursed. I believe one of those curses is a growing government that taxes the shirts off our backs and takes more and more of our freedom away. We, as a nation, are being cursed. The devourer is upon us.

Consider what we learn In I Samuel 8. We see God’s people demanding a king. God wasn’t sufficient for them.

God warns them through Samuel (paraphrasing) if you get a king he will take your sons and put them into state service. He will take your daughters for perfumers, cooks, and bakers. He will confiscate the best of your fields and vineyards and give them to his servants. He will also take a tenth of your flocks and even you yourselves will become his servants.

This Scripture indicates that even a ten percent tax to the state is considered extreme.
