Community Honors Dale Dyer

Citizens and notables of Fannin County came out Thursday morning, December 8th to pay tribute to Dale Dyer. The event was, in part, to commemorate Dyer’s 92nd birthday. But, more so, the event was meant to recognize Dyer for his contributions to the community. Mr. Dyer is best known for his work in preserving Fannin County History. Most notably, Dyer co-authored, Facets of Fannin County, Georgia, an illustrated look at numerous historical nooks of the County. Dyer is also part of the historical society that helped establish and runs the Fannin County Historical Museum.

Starting prematurely at 9 A.M., the event was held at the Fannin County Courthouse in Courtroom C on the third floor. Citizens sat in benches watching appreciatively, as words were said in Dyer’s honor, thanking him for all he has done or the community. Commission Chairman Bill Simonds signed a resolution making a December 8th Dale Dyer Day.Later, for her part Mayor Donna Whitener presented Mr. Dyer with a key to the City of Blue Ridge. Although the event was cut short due to legal proceedings scheduled in the room, the event was none-the-less poignant for its brevity.

Standing before the community that came out to honor him, Mr. Dyer, bright-eyed with joy, thanked everyone, especially the County and City of Blue Ridge for the recognition.

“I just wanted to thank every one of you for this recognition,” he said, “and I appreciate every bit of it.”

After Dyer’s final words, applause filled the room and people from the benches thronged around him, eager to shake his hand and convey their appreciation for all Dale Dyer has done for their community.

Later that day, a reception was held Dyer’s honor at the First Baptist Church in Blue Ridge.
